  • Patent number: 7740001
Abstract: A fuel injection system for an internal combustion engine is provided for providing an injection event including a first stage and a second stage via a single nozzle. The nozzle is connected by its inlet port to a source of variable fuel pressure and it includes a needle valve for performing the first stage of injection, and a poppet valve for performing the second stage of injection. The first and second stages of injection are selectable by controlling the fuel pressure in the inlet port which is common for both the needle valve and the poppet valve.

  • Patent number: 7610881
Abstract: A valve actuation system for providing added motion in the valve mechanism of an internal combustion engine with at least one inlet valve and at least one exhaust valve is provided. The valve mechanism includes a rotatable camshaft including rising and falling ramps designed to interact with a valve control plunger inside a cylinder for actuation of the inlet or exhaust valve under the action of a valve spring. The cylinder communicates with a hydraulic fluid feed line via a check valve and with a hydraulic control circuit allowing a return movement of a valve to be delayed in relation to the timing of the corresponding falling ramp. The hydraulic control circuit includes a first and a second hydraulic fluid flow restrictor connected to the control plunger cylinder at different levels along its longitudinal axis. A selector valve enables a connection between the cylinder and hydraulic fluid return line to be opened via either one only or both flow restrictors.

  • Patent number: 7549410
Abstract: A fuel injection system for an internal combustion system includes an Engine Management System (EMS), a fuel feed pump, a return line, a high-pressure pump, supplying fuel under pressure to a common rail, a hydraulically operated valve forming an outlet chamber connected to the common rail and a control chamber, the valve being designed such that, in its closed position, the valve prevents the flow out of the outlet chamber, and an electrically operated pilot valve. A nozzle with a resilient member that biases the nozzle towards closing is connected to the outlet of the hydraulically operated valve in such a way that pressure at the outlet of the hydraulically operated valve tends to overcome the force of the resilient member and open the nozzle. An electrically operated spill valve is connected between the outlet of the hydraulically operated valve and the return line.

  • Patent number: 7100573
Abstract: The fuel injection system according to the invention comprises a nozzle (2) with an inlet and a needle (15). A control piston (16) forms a control chamber (17) and abuts the needle such that a higher pressure in the control chamber urges the piston to close the nozzle. A cam-driven plunger (5) forms a plunger chamber (7) connected to the inlet of the nozzle. The system also comprises a common rail (11) for fuel, a feed line (13) and an electrically operated valve (9). The valve isolates the chamber from the common rail and connects it to the line while in a third position, isolates it from both the line and the common rail in a second position, and isolates it from the line and connects it to the common rail in a first position. There are also means (12) for pressurizing the feed line with a relatively low fuel feed pressure and a fuel tank (20). The control chamber is connected to the common rail.
