  • Patent number: 5169719
Abstract: Water-dilutable polyurethane/acrylic copolymers which may be either completely nonionically stabilized or partically nonionically and partically anionically stabilized comprise the reaction product of an ethylenically terminated polyurethane macromonomer containing poly(oxyalklyene) segments and one or more ethylencially unsaturated monomers selected from acrylic acid, methacruylic acid, fumaric acid, styrene, vintyltoluene, and alkyl and hydroxyalkyl esters of acrylic, methacrylic, and furamic acids. • Patent number: 5017673
Abstract: Laterally stabilized, water-miscible polyester polyurethane resins, useful as principal binder resins and as pigment grind resins in water-borne coating systems are the reaction product of one or more polyols, one or more polyisocyanates, and a polyester prepolymer formed by the reaction of a polyether alcohol, one or more polyols, and one or more polyfunctional carboxylic acids. The resins have a polyester polyurethane backbone with pendant polyether groups, attached to the polyester segments of the backbone, which serves to solubilize and stabilize the resins in aqueous media. The resins have small dispersion particle size at the same or higher molecular weights than similar prior art resins, and produce better metal flake orientation when used as the principal resins in base coat formulations which contain aluminum and mica particulates for "metallic" effect coating finishes.

  • Patent number: 4129712
Abstract: The invention relates to a novel method of preparing aqueous polymeric colloids comprising the steps of (a) polymerization in organic solvent at high concentration of the monomers (b) emulsification of the resultant polymer solution in water using small proportion of surfactant. The pH of the resulting emulsion is adjusted to 6.5 to 10 with amines. The structure of the polymers in the present invention is highly hydrophobic so that, even at full neutralization of the carboxylic acid groups with amines, it would not produce an aqueous solution. Furthermore, in the absence of surfactant, a stable colloidal emulsion cannot be attained. The aqueous coating composition has satisfactory performance as interior and/or exterior coating for food, beer, beverage and other metal containers. The eulsions can be easily applied by spraying or direct roller coating and baked to give films of outstanding properties.
