  • Patent number: 7950669
Abstract: The invention provides a method that can be applied, for example, to seal a constant velocity joint. The invention includes a method comprising the steps of substantially sealing the constant velocity joint with the primary boot which includes first and second ends, fixedly associating the first end of the primary boot with the constant velocity joint, and slidably associating the second end of the primary boot with the shaft which extends from the constant velocity joint. In one aspect, the invention includes a primary boot having a body defining a substantially smooth interior surface and a secondary boot associated with the primary boot and spaced from the interior surface. In another aspect, the invention includes a constant velocity joint having an outer joint member, an inner joint member positioned in the outer joint member, a plurality of ball members positioned between said outer and inner joint members, and a shaft engaged with and extending from the inner joint member.

  • Publication number: 20090263181
Abstract: A joint assembly for coupling first and second rotating parts, including a first joint member for mounting to the first rotating part, a second joint member including a centering flange having a first length disposed about an axis for mounting to the second rotating part, and at least one torque-transmitting element disposed between the first and second joint members for operatively coupling the first and second joint members. The centering flange has a contact section configured for being in a substantially interference fit with the second rotating part when mounting the centering flange to the second rotating part. The contact section has a second length substantially smaller than the first length of the centering flange such that the substantially interference fit between the centering flange and the second rotating part provides alignment between the centering flange and the second rotating part while minimizing forces necessary to mount the centering flange to the second rotating part.

  • Publication number: 20060189396
Abstract: The present invention provides a driveline assembly for transferring power from a vehicle transmission to a driveline component, such as a transfer case or differential. The driveline assembly comprises a drive shaft having a first end configured for operatively coupling to the vehicle transmission. A constant velocity (CV) joint assembly is mounted to a second, opposite end of the drive shaft. More specifically, the joint assembly includes an outer race welded to a tubular member of the drive shaft and an inner race disposed within the outer race. A plurality of torque-transmitting balls are disposed between the inner and outer races to transmit torque from the outer race to the inner race and on to the driveline component. The inner race is configured for mating with a secondary shaft coupled to the driveline component.

  • Publication number: 20060185124
Abstract: The present invention provides a joint assembly for operatively coupling rotating parts. The joint assembly comprises first and second joint members. A plurality of torque-transmitting balls are secured in a cage disposed between the joint members. The second joint member is disposed about an axis and includes a centering flange having a first length for mounting to the second rotating part. The centering flange has a contact section configured for being in a substantially interference fit with the second rotating part. The contact section has a second length substantially smaller than the first length of the centering flange such that the substantially interference fit provides proper alignment between the centering flange and the second rotating part while minimizing forces necessary to mount the centering flange to the second rotating part.
