  • Publication number: 20230393405
Abstract: Eyewear such as a head-mounted device may include display-optimized lenses. The lenses may be optimized for viewing an external display while also providing sun protection for the user's eyes. The external display may form part of a handheld electronic device that serves as a controller for the head-mounted device. The lenses in the head-mounted device may reduce ambient light brightness while maintaining the brightness of the external display so that the user can use the external display while wearing the head-mounted device. The user may, for example, provide touch input to the external display to adjust display content on the head-mounted display. The lenses may include a polarizer and a color filter having a transmission spectrum curve with peaks corresponding to the primary colors of the external display. The lenses may be removable clip-on lenses and the light filter may be an electrochromic filter.

  • Patent number: 11803060
Abstract: Eyewear such as sunglasses may include display-optimized lenses. The lenses may be optimized for viewing an external display and/or for viewing a display in the head-mounted device while also providing sun protection for the user's eyes. The lenses may include a polarizer and a color filter that are designed for a given target display. Lenses that are optimized for a display that emits linearly polarized light may include a linear polarizer. Lenses that are optimized for a display that emits circularly polarized light may include a circular polarizer. The circular polarizer may include a quarter wave plate and a linear polarizer. The color filter may have a transmission spectrum curve with peaks corresponding to the primary colors of the target display so that the color and brightness of display light is preserved while the brightness of sunlight is reduced.

  • Patent number: 11601638
Abstract: In one example, a head-mounted display (HMD) device includes multiple display panels arranged in parallel with each other. Each of the display panels is associated with one of multiple focal lengths. The HMD device includes multiple lenses to view a three-dimensional (3D) scene on the display panels. The HMD device also includes a controller to provide a frame of the 3D scene, viewable at the focal lengths. The frames include focal layers generated at one of the focal lengths. The frames are rendered by displaying the focal layers in a sequence on the display panels associated with the focal length at which the focal layer is generated. The controller also allows visible light to pass through one or more of the display panels based on whether the render planes are between an active focal layer and the lenses.

  • Patent number: 10491891
Abstract: A display system and method for using the same are disclosed. In one embodiment, the display system comprises a swept volume display operable to produce a displayed swept volume and a re-imaging glass to re-image the displayed swept volume that appears on a first side of the re-imaging glass to a second side of the re-imaging glass.

  • Publication number: 20180184066
Abstract: In one example, a method for displaying three dimensional light field data can include generating a three dimensional image. The method can also include generating a plurality of disparity maps based on light field data and converting the disparity maps to depth maps. Additionally, the method can include generating a plurality of data slices. The plurality of slices per viewing angle can be shifted and merged together resulting in enhanced parallax of light field data. Furthermore, the method can include filling at least one unrendered region of the merged plurality of data slices with color values based on an interpolation of pixels proximate the at least one unrendered region and displaying modified a three dimensional image based on the merged plurality of data slices with the at least one filled region.

  • Publication number: 20180184074
Abstract: In one example, a method for displaying three dimensional images can include generating a three dimensional image. The method can also include detecting a field of view of a user based on a position and orientation of the head of the user. The method can also include separating the three dimensional image into a plurality of frames based on the field of view of the user, wherein each frame corresponds to one of a plurality of display panels. Furthermore, the method can include modifying the plurality of frames based on a depth of each pixel in the three dimensional image. Additionally, the method can include displaying the three dimensional image using the plurality of display panels.

  • Publication number: 20180164580
Abstract: Embodiments include techniques and configurations for apparatuses and methods for making an optical imaging device based on a micro mirror array. The method may include forming an array of trenches in a substrate. The array of trenches may be formed by intersecting a first plurality of walls with a second plurality of walls in the substrate. A trench of the array of trenches may be formed by adjacent walls of the first plurality of walls and intersecting adjacent walls of the second plurality of walls. A wall of the trench may include a side surface coupled with a top surface. A reflective layer may be deposited conformally to cover the side surface of the wall and to serve as a reflector. A supporting layer may be formed above the substrate, or within the array of trenches, to provide mechanical support for the array of trenches. Other embodiments may be claimed.
