  • Patent number: 9369680
Abstract: The present invention is a roadside safety system and method to communicate to a roadside personnel a potential danger created by an oncoming vehicle. The system includes a projection system that selectively projects a pattern of light in a direction along the roadside, a sensor system that includes a camera to detect the oncoming vehicle, an alert system connected directly or indirectly to the sensor system that selectively causes an alert to notify the roadside personnel when there is the potential danger; and a control system that selectively enables the projection system to project the pattern of light and causes the alert system to issue the alert. The projection system establishes a virtual flare on the road to warn oncoming vehicles of a emergency situation and a processor can process information received by the sensors and can then determine potential threats created by oncoming vehicles.

  • Patent number: 9069003
Abstract: An apparatus for determining a speed of cyclic motion of a device or user and one or more poses of a device may include a processor and memory storing executable computer code causing the apparatus to at least perform operations including receiving one or more determined acceleration values during one or more time periods in response to detected cyclic motion of a user moving with an apparatus. The computer program code may further cause the apparatus to transform the acceleration values to one or more corresponding frequency components associated with the acceleration values. The computer program code may further cause the apparatus to determine a speed of the cyclic motion of the user based in part on comparing a spectrum of the frequency components to one or more spectrums of distribution associated with respective one or more speeds of training data. Corresponding methods and computer program products are also provided.

  • Publication number: 20150154885
Abstract: The present disclosure introduces new multi-functional vibrating devices, methods of using the devices, and methods of manufacturing the devices. A multi-functional vibrating device can include one or more actuators, each paired with an amplifier capable of converting small lateral vibration into large vertical vibration. The present disclosure also involves interactive information acquisition technologies and assistive technologies, particularly devices, methods, and systems for tactile information transfer and acquisition. Some embodiments incorporate multi-functional vibrational devices, methods, and systems to achieve unique structural and operational characteristics—such as high-resolution, robustness, versatility, compactness, and/or rapid refresh rates—for communicating information. Some embodiments can convert information from a format that is less convenient and/or accessible in some cases (e.g., visual or audio) to an intuitive and/or private format (e.g., tactile patterns and motions).
