  • Patent number: 7586872
Abstract: A hierarchical assignment manager (HAM) improves system throughput in a hierarchical overlay network by taking into account the requested data rates in addition to or instead of the velocities of mobile users within the network. The user population is characterized by the statistical description of their user profiles. The entire set of profiles is partitioned along assignment curves into two or more subsets, where each subset corresponds to the assignment to a particular layer of a hierarchical network. The HAM determines assignment curves to optimize the total effective system throughput in a systematic way and can be adapted to time-varying user behavior and profiles. The HAM can be used to decide upon assignment strategies between different layers of an overlay architecture, between different available network technologies, or between competing service providers.

  • Publication number: 20090213801
Abstract: A method may include allocating channels of a wireless local area network (WLAN) including a plurality of access points to the plurality of access points based on a load of each access point. The load of each access point may include a user load and/or an interference load. The user load may be generated by each user of the access point. The interference load may be based on interference caused by transmissions between the remainder of the plurality of access points and users of the remainder of the plurality of access points.

  • Patent number: 7562393
Abstract: A gateway for mobile access includes a foreign agent that receives user profile data and session state data from a home authentication, authorization and accounting (AAA) system of a mobile node, and a dynamic packet filter that performs multi-layer filtering based on the user profile data. The foreign agent transfers a session from a first network to a second network without session interruption, using the session state data, when the mobile node moves from the first network to the second network. The packet filter permits Internet access by the mobile node without passing Internet data requested by the mobile node through the first network.

  • Publication number: 20060146768
Abstract: Unique identifiers are assigned to sets of adjacent access points in a wireless, local area network (WLAN). Thereafter, a unique identifier may be forwarded to a mobile device which uses the identifier to associate itself with one of the adjacent access points. Associating a mobile device with an adjacent access point using unique identifiers allows a WLAN to meet its load balancing objectives.

  • Publication number: 20060064497
Abstract: Association control is utilized for associating wireless local area network users with at least one wireless local area network access point and thereby achieving simultaneous fairness and load balancing. In the present method, a network operation center receives user parameters from each user in the wireless network via the access points. It then sets out both to determine a set of associations between each user and one or more access points based on the user parameters using fractional load balancing and produce a second set of associations by rounding so that, in said second set, each user is associated with only one access point. The present method achieves close to optimal load balancing and max-min fairness while outperforming commonly-used heuristic approaches.

  • Publication number: 20050014496
Abstract: A method and apparatus is disclosed for calculating a threshold used to assign a data transmission from a user to one layer in a plurality of layers in a wireless communications network. A balancing metric is calculated for one layer in the network as a function of a characteristic of the user's data transmission. This balancing metric is then calculated for a second layer in the network, also as a function of the characteristic of the user's transmission. A threshold is then adjusted in response to the value of the first balancing metric relative to the second balancing metric. Data users are then assigned to a layer in the network based on a comparison of the threshold to the value of the characteristic for that user.

  • Publication number: 20040100903
Abstract: A gateway for handling flow of data to or from a plurality of mobile nodes includes an authentication, authorization and accounting (AAA) interface and a queue manager. The AAA interface receives information defining respective quality of service (QoS) levels for a plurality of mobile nodes. The QoS levels are selected from a group of at least two QoS levels. The queue manager individually throttles respective data flows to or from each mobile node while maintaining each data flow greater than or equal to its respective QoS level.
