Patent number: 5790961Abstract: A circuit is disclosed for switching power to a battery operated device, particularly a portable radio transceiver. The power control circuit uses an on/off switch that remains in a fixed "on" or "off" position instead of using a momentary push button switch. The circuit allows powering down the radio to prevent deep discharging of the battery even though the switch remains in the "on" position. Also, the circuit allows the radio to continue to be powered up under microprocessor control after the switch is placed in the "off" position.Type: GrantFiled: January 14, 1997Date of Patent: August 4, 1998Assignee: Ericsson Inc.Inventors: Norbert D. Patent number: 5448657Abstract: Apparatus for measuring a physical quantity such as pressure, temperature, strain etc., by using a beat frequency of a longitudinal mode, a transverse mode or two polarization modes of the optical fiber laser. In the rare-earth optical fiber laser as a resonator, there are two different polarization modes normal to each other. Since the optical path lengths of the optical fiber laser for the two polarization modes are different, longitudinal mode frequencies of each polarization mode are different depending on the birefringence of resonator which is varied as an external physical quantity such as pressure, temperature, strain etc. Due to the variation in the birefringence of the resonator, the longitudinal mode frequency difference between two polarization modes becomes varied. This variation is linearly proportional to the physical quantity externally applied. The difference in longitudinal mode frequency between polarization modes can be measured from a beat signal of the polarization modes.Type: GrantFiled: February 15, 1994Date of Patent: September 5, 1995Assignee: Agency for Defense DevelopmentInventors: Byoung Y. Patent number: 5299006Abstract: A caption VCR having a caption decoder, therein, for detecting a caption signal from a broadcasting signal or detecting a caption signal recorded on a VCR tape. The caption VCR normally operates to display a video signal having no caption signal. However, if the caption signal including character and screen data is detected by the caption decoder, the caption VCR displays the caption signal including the character and screen data. Also, a method of displaying the caption signal from the caption decoder together with an audio signal and a video signal in the caption VCR is provided. Therefore, it is convenient for the deaf person or foreign language learner to watch a desired image containing the caption signal on the screen utilizing the caption decoder.Type: GrantFiled: November 27, 1991Date of Patent: March 29, 1994Inventor: Seung K. Patent number: 5066891Abstract: A magnetic field sensing and canceling circuit for use with a cathode ray tube (CRT) has a closed loop system consisting of flux gate sensors to measure external magnetic fields and magnetic field cancellation coils around the perimeter of the faceplate of the CRT to cancel the fields and thus minimize color and positional ac image distortion. The coils are mounted on an enclosure fabricated of a high permeability material and are positioned around the perimeter of the CRT's faceplate. Four of the coils are parallel to the top, bottom, and sides of the enclosure opening and a fifth coil is wound around the enclosure adjacent the CRT faceplate. The magnetic flux gate sensors provide output signals that are functions of the detected fields. These signals control the current in the magetic field cancellation coils and thus control the cancellation fields.Type: GrantFiled: January 2, 1990Date of Patent: November 19, 1991Assignee: Raytheon CompanyInventors: William J. Patent number: 4300165Abstract: A digital staircase search is provided for the automatic fine tuning (AFT) control of a television receiver to extend the range of fine tuning. The staircase search generator is of digital construction to provide the capability of holding the level of search voltage obtained when the picture carrier is detected and to realize discrete steps of tuning voltage change, each step being within the pull-in range of the AFT. The search signal generated has each step of the staircase of opposite polarity so that sweep of the tuning voltage is bi-directional. The absence of a picture carrier activates operation of the search mode and disables the automatic fine tuning control. Upon detection of the picture carrier a harmonic of the horizontal sync pulses in the detected carrier is converted to a control signal which disables the search process and enables operation of the automatic fine tuning control. The automatic fine tuning control operates from the step of the staircase held upon search termination.Type: GrantFiled: August 17, 1979Date of Patent: November 10, 1981Assignee: General Electric CompanyInventor: Seung K. Patent number: 4183047Abstract: A chroma level control circuit for a television receiver is responsive to the average of selected portions of color difference signals to reduce deviations from a viewer-selected chroma level. The preferred chromal level is selected by the viewer and the automatic control circuit responds to amplitude variations in selected portions of the color difference signals to stabilize chroma level about the preferred level. A gating circuit is responsive to the demodulated color difference signals and selective of portions thereof, e.g. the positive portion of the R-Y signal, so that only selected hues are used to automatically control the chroma level by adjustment of the receiver's chroma gain controlled amplifier. The circuit is also responsive to low brightness levels in the scene to temporize chroma level control during low brightness scenes. In addition, the chroma level control circuit is frequency selective, i.e.Type: GrantFiled: December 8, 1977Date of Patent: January 8, 1980Assignee: General Electric CompanyInventors: Seung K.
