Abstract: An emoticon input method and mobile terminal are provided. A message writing display is provided for a user. A character input menu for inputting characters and an emoticon input menu for inputting emoticons are displayed along with the message writing display. When the user selects the emoticon input menu, an emoticon input mode is entered. A plurality of emoticon groups is displayed in the emoticon input mode. Each of the plurality of emoticon groups includes a plurality of emoticons. When an emoticon group is selected from among the plurality of emoticon groups, a plurality of emoticons included in the selected emoticon group is displayed. When at least one emoticon is selected from among the plurality of emoticons included in the selected emoticon group, the at least one emoticon selected by the user is displayed as part of a message.

The method comprises compressing a voice message inputted by a user or a received voice mail into a voice data-and storing the compressed voice message or mail; if an SVMS function is selected, reading from a memory a selected voice data, segmenting the read voice data into segmented voice data of a predetermined size, and transmitting the segmented voice data to another mobile communication terminal using the SVMS; reassembling segmented voice files received from a transmitting mobile communication terminal, and storing the reassembled voice file in the memory; and upon receiving a voice mail playback request from the user, reading a selected voice data from the memory, decompressing the read voice data into voice signals, and outputting the voice signals to an output device of the mobile communication terminals.

According to the present invention, a phone having a phone book function can originate a call even if a selected phone number includes characters, and a phone having a DTMF transmission code storing function can transmit a corresponding DTMF signal even if a selected DTMF transmission code has characters. For this purpose, the characters of the selected phone number and the selected DTMF code are converted to digits assigned to keys having the characters.
