  • Patent number: 6999420
Abstract: An architecture, design, and realization for providing Quality of Service (QoS) to Internet Protocol (IP) networks based on a three-class differentiated service scheme where the service provider uses a resource management system and a schedule optimizer to enable the optimal use of bandwidth and buffer resources at each node along the various links between the ingress and egress points in a network. The resource reservation system checks to determine whether sufficient bandwidth resources are available along the path requested by the customer for a particular class. The schedule optimizer ensures that sufficient buffer resource allocations and parameter settings are made to optimally reach the predetermined QoS criteria for each of the three classes. The system also contains a mechanism supporting resource reservations providing additional resources along alternative paths if the selected path links fail in the network.

  • Publication number: 20060018256
Abstract: This invention provides for a technique for selectively off-loading traffic from congested sub-regions of a network to more lightly-loaded regions by making use of Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS). For each network element, an Interior Gateway Protocol (IGP) routing is employed to provide re-routing and to identify congested links caused by re-routed trunks for each single failure. The re-routed traffic is then analyzed and alternate Label Switched Paths (LSPs) are identified for such traffic trunks so that the traffic is directed to the alternate LSPs during the single failure event.

  • Publication number: 20030033379
Abstract: A dynamic activation system which contains an intelligent central data repository which enables service providers to add or alter services and equipment to existing networks by providing a central data store of information which can receive, retrieve, and conform data from one attached operations systems or piece of network equipment for use by all attached operations systems and equipment. The intelligent central data repository provides a directory based storage of global and exchanged local data, determines which systems and equipment require updating, and formats the update or new data for use by each operation system or piece of equipment. The intelligent central data repository can be configured to push or pull data to the operation systems and attached equipment and can analyze the data resident on the attached equipment or operation systems to determine if any data has been altered or added before pushing or pulling data.

  • Patent number: 6483832
Abstract: A method and a system for forwarding multicast data packets across a plurality of telecommunications subnets interconnected by routers in which a data packet is received within a subnet of the plurality of telecommunications subnets. When the data packet is a multicast data packet, a multicast IP address for the multicast data packet is determined. A multicast forwarding database is accessed for determining a LAN Emulation Client associated with the multicast IP address, and a Broadcast Unknown Server associated with the multicast IP address for the multicast data packet is determined. The multicast data packet is sent to the Broadcast Unknown Server associated with the multicast IP address for the multicast data packet through the LAN Emulation Client using a point-to-point connection.

  • Patent number: 6298120
Abstract: A method is disclosed for establishing communication between an originating station and a destination station over a computer network such as the Internet, for example. In accordance with the invention, at least one service attribute requested by the originating station is received over a signaling path. A communication path is then established between the originating and destination stations in conformance with the requested service attribute. The signaling path is an out-of-band signaling path with respect to the communication path.

  • Patent number: 6078963
Abstract: An improved network router having a plurality of intelligent router ports. Each intelligent router port may have its own routing and/or forwarding engines. Thus, a centralized master routing and forwarding engine, existing in conventional routers, is not necessary. Accordingly, the bottlenecking problems associated with a centralized routing and forwarding engine are significantly reduced.

  • Patent number: 6021136
Abstract: A telecommunication network establishes a telephone call from a first location that generates compressed voice packets to a second location. The telecommunication network includes a plurality of switches, a first interworking function ("IWF") coupled to the first location and coupled to a first switch of the plurality of switches, a second IWF coupled to the second location and coupled to a second switch of the plurality of switches, and a network database coupled to said first switch. When a telephone call is initiated from the first location, the first switch receives signaling information from the first location. The first switch then queries the network database based on the signaling information and determines whether the second location uses compressed voice packets based on the query. Finally, the first switch establishes a connection between the first IWF and the second IWF if it is determined that the second location uses compressed voice packets.

  • Patent number: 5996021
Abstract: An internetwork relay system and method for transmitting IP traffic including an edge and a core. The edge includes an ingress and egress routers and the core includes a switch network. The ingress router communicates with and receives an IP packet from a source network. The ingress router attaches to each IP packet, a globally unique label which is used to forward the IP packet across the network. The relay switch network communicates with the ingress router, receives the IP packet from the ingress router and forwards the IP packet along its transmission path based on destination information included in its attached label. The egress router receives the IP packet from the switch network and forwards it to a destination network. Once received, the destination network forwards the IP packet to its intended destination.

  • Patent number: 5956334
Abstract: A method is provided for establishing a communication session over a path supported at least in part by a telephony network and an ATM network. The telephony network includes ingress and egress telephony switches and the ATM network includes ingress and egress ATM switches. A first call setup request is received at the ingress telephony switch from an originating node and the ingress telephony switch selects a first available trunk from the ingress telephony switch to the ingress ATM switch. A communications path is established over the available trunk to the ingress telephony switch. A second call setup request is transmitted from the ingress telephony switch to the egress telephony switch and the egress telephony switch selects a second available trunk from the egress telephony switch to the egress ATM switch.

  • Patent number: 5878212
Abstract: A name mapper, name servers, and multimedia servers are connected to a multimedia manager. Each client has the name of a multimedia server, i.e., a virtual host name, from which it can obtain multimedia service. The name server stores associations of server host names to layer-3 addresses. When a client initiates a multimedia session, it requests the layer-3 address of the server that corresponds to its server's name. The name server sends the layer-3 address of the one of the multimedia servers that is currently designated as corresponding to that name. The multimedia client stores the name-to-layer-3 address binding in it's cache. The multimedia client then establishes communications with the multimedia server at that layer-3 address and clears its cache. The dynamic name-to-layer-3 address binding in the name server is managed by the name mapper, which may be collocated with the multimedia manager or may be located on a separate server.

  • Patent number: 5828844
Abstract: A telecommunications network is provided for establishing communication between at least one originating station and at least one destination station. The network includes a plurality of IP switches for addressing and routing data in accordance with an Internet protocol and an ATM protocol. A server, which is coupled to at least one of the IP switches, receives at least one service attribute requested by the originating station in communication with the IP switch. A network control point (NCP) is employed to provide data, in response to a request from the server, pertaining to the service attribute. At least one address database is associated with each of the IP switches. The address database includes a subset of the data available in the NCP.
