  • Patent number: 9356979
Abstract: A particular kind of component carrier that may be used as a secondary cell in an LTE system is a new type carrier that has reduced or eliminated legacy control signaling such as the omission of CRSs. Alternative techniques are described for performing timing and frequency synchronization in the downlink between an eNB and a UE when CRSs are not present in a component carrier. These techniques involve using either channel state information reference signals or UE-specific reference signals.

  • Publication number: 20160044615
Abstract: Technology is discussed for supporting the incorporation of a Primary Synchronization Signal (PSS) and/or a Secondary Synchronization Signal (SSS) within in a New Carrier Type (NCT) for a Component Carrier (CC). Guidelines for incorporating the PSS and/or the SSS in the NCT are discovered, together with potential collisions with other signals that can be avoided for various scenarios. In some examples, various guidelines and potential collisions discovered herein, for various scenarios, inform approaches to incorporating the PSS and/or the SSS based on the positioning of the PSS and/or the SSS. In other examples, other signals, such as DeModulation Reference Symbols (DMRS) are reconfigured to allow incorporation of the PSS and the SSS.

  • Publication number: 20150327247
Abstract: A new carrier type (NCT) has been developed for LTE in order to reduce the overhead associated with cell-specific reference signals (CRS) and control signaling via the PDCCH. The NCT is an LTE carrier with minimized control channel overhead and cell-specific reference signals. Described herein are techniques where, upon receiving a PDSCH grant from a eNB using DCI format 1A to indicate a fallback transmission mode, a UE transmits a CQI to the eNB based upon CSI-RS resources contained in the NCT.

  • Publication number: 20150264699
Abstract: Opportunistic networking systems can utilize one or multiple bands/channels that are shared with other radio access technologies (RATs) (such as wireless local area networks (WLAN, such as Wi-Fi) and mmWave). An unconventional carrier type (UCT) can be defined to support opportunistic networking in licensed and/or unlicensed spectrum. For example, a primary base station can determine a secondary base station activated for use with user equipment (UE). The primary base station can schedule data to be sent to the UE via the secondary base station. The secondary base station can provide discovery information, reserve a wireless channel, transmit the data and/or release the channel (implicitly, explicitly, or by reservation).

  • Publication number: 20150223075
Abstract: A device uses a first protocol to incorporate a reservation of a medium using a second protocol within the bounds of the first protocol. For example, an evolved node B (also known as an e node B or eNB) using a long term evolution over unlicensed spectrum (LTE-U) protocol can be configured to reserve unlicensed spectrum using a (wireless local area network) WLAN message placed within a muting gap within the LAA protocol. In one embodiment, the eNB selects to broadcast the WLAN reservation message using a set of options including: (1) from a control channel region of LAA, (2) from a muting gap indicated by a reservation muting symbol pattern indicator, (3) from a time division duplex (TDD) guard period (GP), (4) from a TDD uplink pilot time slot (UpPTS), (5) from an empty uplink (UL) subframe or (6) from a sounding reference signal (SRS).
