  • Patent number: 6707642
Abstract: A longitudinal recording head for use with magnetic recording media includes first and second writes poles in which the second pole has sides that wrap around a portion of the first pole in order to reduce or eliminate side fringing fields. The wrapped around sides of the second pole have relatively small cross sections away from the air bearing surface of the recording head, and relatively large cross sections at the air bearing surface. The sides may saturate in the narrow regions away from the air bearing surface, but do not saturate in the broad regions adjacent the air bearing surface. Longitudinal recording heads incorporating the wrapped around second pole sides effectively reduce or eliminate side fringing and are capable of improved recording densities.

  • Patent number: 6621664
Abstract: An integrated read/write perpendicular recording head facilitates the use of magnetic storage media having a high magnetic recording density and high data rates. The use of a perpendicular write portion provides adequate space between the main and opposing poles for a read element and associated electrical contacts therebetween. The use of a differential dual spin valve as a read element eliminates the need for magnetic shielding of the read element. Such a structure permits the read element and main write pole to be close together, thereby minimizing seek time, and permitting rapid transition from read to write operations, and vice versa.

  • Patent number: 6574072
Abstract: The present invention provides a modified perpendicular magnetic recording head which generates a relatively small magnetic field in a radial direction through the soft underlayer of a magnetic recording disk in order to reduce unwanted noise from the underlayer. The radial magnetic field is sufficiently strong to effectively drive the magnetic domains out of the soft underlayer underneath the head.

  • Patent number: 6504675
Abstract: A writer for perpendicular recording on bilayer media with suppressed skew angle effect on the width of the recorded track is disclosed. The writer has a wide and flat trailing edge and a narrow leading edge. In a preferred embodiment, the pole has a trapezoidal cross-section. • Patent number: 5314596
Abstract: A thin film magnetic recording head for high-density recording applications. The head includes a pole formed from at least two ferromagnetic material layers with one layer having high anisotropy (H.sub.k) and low permeability (.mu.), and the other layer having low H.sub.k and high .mu.. The high H.sub.k layer provides the lower magnetic impedance flux path in the tip region and the low H.sub.k layer provides the lower magnetic impedance path in the yoke region of the head. A non-magnetic film may be disposed between the layers, with a thickness chosen to minimize domain flux coupling of the two magnetic layers, while allowing magnetic signal flux transfer between layers at an appropriate point between the tip and the yoke. The pole may be sculpted so that the low H.sub.k layer extends only partially into the tip region, or so that the high H.sub.k layer extends only partially into the yoke.
