  • Patent number: 5977348
Abstract: This invention relates to a process for chemically modifying polysaccharides in a densified fluid. In particular, the modification includes esterification and/or etherification of a starch in supercritical carbon dioxide. The process is advantageous in that it allows for a high degree of substitution without the use of organic solvents or repeated reactions.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: July 25, 1997
Date of Patent: November 2, 1999
Assignee: National Starch and Chemical Investment Holding Corporation
Inventors: Rosemarie Harris, Sharon H. Jureller, Judith L. Kerschner, Peter T. Trzasko, Robert W. R. Humphreys
  • Patent number: 5516738
Abstract: A method for epoxidizing olefins is provided wherein an olefin and an oxygenating agent are contacted together in the presence of a manganese complex catalyst having at least one manganese atom coordinated with a nitrogen-containing ligand such that the manganese atom to coordinated nitrogen atom is 1:3 and thereafter isolating the resultant epoxide product. Catalyst compositions are also provided formed from the adsorption of the manganese complex catalyst onto a solvent insoluble support.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: May 27, 1994
Date of Patent: May 14, 1996
Assignee: National Starch and Chemical Investment Holding Corporation
Inventors: Sharon H. Jureller, Judith L. Kerschner, Robert Humphreys

  • Patent number: 5194416
Abstract: Novel bleach and oxidation catalysts are reported as well as a bleaching-detergent composition employing these catalysts and a method for removing stains from substrates. The catalysts are manganese complexes of the formula:[LMn.sup.IV (OR).sub.3 ]Y,whereinMn is manganese in the +4 oxidation state;R is a C.sub.1 -C.sub.20 radical selected from the group consisting of alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl, benzyl and radical combinations thereof;at least two R radicals may also be connected to one another so as to form a bridging unit between two oxygens that coordinate with the manganese;L is a ligand selected from a C.sub.3 -C.sub.60 radical having at least 3 nitrogen atoms coordinating with the manganese; andY is an oxidatively-stable counterion.
