    Abstract: An air bearing slider for use in a disk drive. The slider includes a leading side and an opposing trailing side. The slider includes a pair of opposing lateral sides disposed between the leading and trailing sides. The slider includes a leading side air bearing surface including a main portion adjacent the leading side and a trailing portion extending from the main portion toward the trailing side along a respective one of the lateral sides. The slider includes a side rail disposed laterally along and between the respective lateral side and the trailing portion. The slider includes a channel formed between the side rail and the trailing portion disposed angularly with respect to the respective lateral side by extending from adjacent the respective lateral side towards the trailing side away from the respective lateral side for receiving airflow through the channel during operation of the disk drive.

    Abstract: A magnetic disk which includes a thin film magnetic layer resistant to thermal erasures caused by a rise in localized temperature in the disk due to head disk interference includes a substrate having a thermal diffusivity of less than about 2.times.10.sup.-6 m.sup.2 /sec and a magnetic layer for storing information which is subject to erasure upon such use in localized temperature generated by the head disk interference. An underlayer below the magnetic layer is provided for orienting crystalline structure of the magnetic layer, and the heat sink layer directly above the substrate and directly below the underlayer has a single material such as chromium. The heat sink layer has sufficient thermal diffusivity and sufficient thickness for dissipating heat generated by the rise in localized temperature caused by head disk interference to prevent the erasure of stored information in the magnetic layer.

    Abstract: An air bearing slider having debris removing channels for a hard disk drive. An air bearing slider contains a center pad having multiple longitudinal debris channels cut therein approximately 1-3 microns wide and approximately 1-3 microns deep and spanning the entire length of the air bearing surface of the center pad. The debris channels are effective for collecting small sized debris and passing them through the channel length and out the trailing end of the center pad. By this action, the debris are prevented from collecting along the edges, corners and on the top surface of the center pad or on and around the transducer situated on the center pad. By reducing debris in these locations, the debris does not alter the flying height of the slider with respect to the surface of the disk. Therefore, by eliminating debris around the transducer, this invention eliminates errors caused by the debris and thereby provides a more reliable disk drive.

    Abstract: Coatings of a powdered protective metallic material or refractory material and mixtures thereof are formed on a ferrous metal strip as a wet film dispersion in a resin binder composition of a synthetic organic resin and a volatile organic solvent compatible with said resin, and the coated strip is heated to effect curing said resin binder and forming a flexible non-tacky dry film. The metal strip having the cured dry film containing powdered protective metallic material can be subjected to varying heat treatments to provide a wide range of protective coatings having improved surface properties, including iron-protective metal diffusion alloy coatings, such as iron-aluminum diffusion alloy coatings having a surface concentration of aluminum between about 8 and 10 wt. percent aluminum, which have improved high temperature oxidation resistance after being severely strained during fabrication at room temperature.

    Abstract: A solid solution iron-aluminum diffusion alloy coated steel strip is formed by hot-dip aluminum coating a cold rolled low alloy low carbon steel strip preferably having all the carbon in the steel combined with titanium by hot-dip aluminum coating the steel strip and subjecting the aluminum coated low alloy steel strip to a controlled diffusion heat treatment in a non-oxidizing atmosphere for a period and at a temperature which avoids significantly increasing the grain size of the steel, and which effects diffusion of the hot-dip aluminum coating into the steel to establish a critical surface concentration of aluminum in the iron-aluminum diffusion alloy coating of at least about 8 wt. percent and below an aluminum surface concentration which results in crazing and cracking of the diffusion alloy coating when the diffusion alloy coated strip is fabricated at room temperature.
