  • Patent number: 4366273
Abstract: This invention relates to a composition comprising a linear, saturated polyester, such as poly(ethylene terephthalate), containing between about 4% and about 10% by weight of the poly(ethylene terephthalate) of a hydrocarbon carboxylic acid and/or an organic polymer containing pendant acid carboxyl groups, where the acid groups are neutralized by a first cation selected from Group IA of the Periodic Table of Elements and a second cation selected from Groups IIIA, IIIB and IVB. The first cation is present in an amount less than 50% of the total metal ions and neutralizes not more than 20% of the hydrocarbon acid groups or carboxylic acid groups of the organic polymer. The second cation neutralizes up to 100% of the remaining hydrocarbon acid or carboxyl acid groups. Preferably, the first cation is sodium and the second cation is aluminum. The composition can contain up to about 150% filler and a suitable plasticizer.

  • Patent number: 4362851
Abstract: Crystalline adducts of the polyamides: poly-e-caproamide, poly(hexamethylene adipamide), poly-p-benzamide, poly(p-benzanilidene terephthalamide), and mixtures thereof; with the perfluorinated diacids: perfluorosuccinic acid, perfluoroglutaric acid, perfluoroadipic acid, and mixtures thereof. The polyamide components of the adducts contain at least 25 about amide groups in the polymer chain, preferably at least 75 amide groups for aliphatic polyamides and at least 50 amide groups for aromatic polyamides. The adducts can be formed into shaped objects from which diacid can be leached to produce a porous object useful for example as a filtration device.

  • Patent number: 4336356
Abstract: Partially unsaturated polymers are dissolved in a two component solvent comprising a first component having a reactivity toward ozone less than carbon-carbon double bonds but more reactive than carbon-carbon single bonds and a second component being inert toward ozone. Introduction of ozone into the solution produces ozonides which are readily cleft into difunctional aliphatic species that can be converted to e.g. carboxy-terminated or multifunctional carboxy substituted aliphatic compounds. These may be used as monomeric species in various polymerization schemes as such, in preparation of polyamides, for example, or may be reduced to aldehydes or alcohols to be used in the preparation of such polymers as polyesters, polyurethanes, poly (Schiff bases), etc. The carboxylated products may also be employed as ionomers, which are useful as surfactants. Monocarboxyl terminated polyethylene having a number average molecular weight of from about 4,000 to 100,000 are provided.

  • Patent number: 4232951
Abstract: Mesomorphic polyisocyanate compositions are described having extended rigid polymer backbones with flexible pendant groups. The compositions exhibit liquid-crystalline behavior and are useful in a device and process for displaying indicia, performing memory functions or indicating temperature. Novel polyisocyanate compositions for use in the above device and process are also described.

  • Patent number: 4055606
Abstract: Novel copolyester-polyepoxide compositions possessing a high green strength and tack before curing and characterized by having a single discernible glass transition temperature are produced. The compositions are composed of a copolyester and a polyepoxide mixture containing high, intermediate and low molecular weight components. They are especially useful as gap-filling adhesives and for various other adhesive applications. Methods of preparation are also described.
