Abstract: A method and apparatus for representing a conversation of related messages is provided. In a message collection user interface for displaying messages sent and received by a communications device, a dynamic session placeholder is used for a respective conversation of related messages. The message collection user interface is displayed including any dynamic session placeholders in the list of messages. As messages from the conversation are occasioned, the dynamic session placeholder is updated. When the message collection is displayed, it is displayed in accordance with the updated session placeholder.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for conducting at least two concurrent conversation sessions is provided whereby a user may quickly switch between sessions. A graphical user interface may be provided comprising a first portion for conducting a first communication session and a second portion for immediately invoking a switch to a second communication session. In operation, the first portion of the graphical user interface is switched to immediately conduct said second communication session in response to a user input to invoke the switch. The second component can display notifications for concurrent session activities and a particular notification selected by a user to invoke the switch.

Abstract: A computer readable medium, method and user device for a user interface functionality for SMS and SMS-like message conversations is provided. A group of individual SMS messages is treated as a single entity by the SMS conversation UI, the SMS conversation history UI saves space by including the SMS editor within the conversation history panel, and displays a pop-up display with useful information regarding the SMS message being edited.

Abstract: Methods, devices, and computer readable media for switching communications from a first messaging protocol/service to a second messaging protocol/service by use of messaging information being embedded in a header of a first message of the first messaging protocol/service to enable the recipient to contact the sender over the second messaging protocol/service, is provided.

Abstract: To automatically determine the availability status of the user of a handheld communication device, various selected conditions of the device may be checked, which imply whether or not the user is likely Available, or Unavailable or the equivalent. Normally, the selected conditions are checked only if the user has not explicitly or semi-explicitly set his or her status to Unavailable. The conditions to be checked can vary widely, but generally include anything from which it might be inferred or implied that the user is likely either Available or Unavailable or the equivalent. Such conditions can include, for example, whether or not a specified timeout for use of a keypad, trackwheel or other mechanical feature of the device has elapsed yet; whether or not a real-time application is in use; and preferably any one or more of a variety of other conditions, one further example being whether or not there are any unattended-to notifications such as an unanswered phone call, or a missed e-mail, SMS or other message.

Abstract: Multiple applications in a handheld electronic device share a plurality of databases. The shared databases have a data adapter that includes an interface module that communicates with the various applications, logic that formulates a query containing the arguments in a data request from an application and a reader that retrieves the requested data from the associated database. The logic then generates a response for return to the application, which can include processing of the read data such as by adding frequency of use data for text input applications, and/or sorting of the data.
