  • Patent number: 7783197
Abstract: A method and apparatus is provided for transmitting a WDM optical signal. The method begins by modulating a plurality of optical channels that are each located at a different wavelength from one another with a respective one of a plurality of information-bearing electrical signals The channel spacings between adjacent ones of the plurality of optical channels are selected such that the optical channels give rise to selected FWM terms that lie outside a channel bandwidth of the optical channels. Each of the modulated optical channels is multiplexed to form a WDM optical signal. The WDM optical signal is then forwarded onto an optical transmission path.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: May 22, 2007
Date of Patent: August 24, 2010
    Assignee: General Instrument Corporation
Inventors: Kerry Litvin, Michael Aviles, Shawn Esser
