  • Publication number: 20130232964
Abstract: A hybrid power source includes an electric power source, a first hydraulic pump powered by the electric power source, a hydrocarbon burning power source, and a second hydraulic pump powered by the hydrocarbon burning power source. A hydraulic fluid output is fed by a combined output from the first hydraulic pump and the second hydraulic pump. A controller is provided for dynamically calculating hydraulic fluid requirements at the hydraulic fluid output as work is performed. The hydraulic fluid requirements are primarily provided by the first hydraulic pump powered by the electric power source and supplemented, as directed by the controller, by the second hydraulic pump powered by the hydrocarbon burning power source.

  • Patent number: 8381840
Abstract: A method of protecting a top drive drilling assembly includes incorporating a shock absorbing sub incorporated in the top drive drilling assembly. The shock absorbing sub comprises a first body and a second body capable of relative axial movement, with a shock absorbing medium disposed between the first body and the second body to absorb any reactive axial force exerted upon the top drive drilling assembly.

  • Patent number: 7467659
Abstract: A tubing injector head, includes a main body adapted for mounting on a well. A pair of gripper chain supports are mounted to the main body. Each gripper chain support has an upper chain sprocket at an upper end and a lower chain sprocket at a lower end. A drive motor drives the upper chain sprocket to move a gripper chain along a bearing surface. A tubing channel is positioned between the gripper chain supports. Telescopic cylinders are provided for creating relative movement of the gripper chain supports, while maintaining the first bearing surface and the second bearing surface in parallel spaced relation. The telescopic cylinders move the gripper chains into or out of engagement with tubing positioned in the tubing channel.

  • Patent number: 6913096
Abstract: A top drive well drilling apparatus includes a body with means for suspending the body from a drilling rig. A motor is secured to the body. The motor has a central passage defining a rotational axis. The central passage is adapted to receive a tubular drive shaft. A pipe gripping assembly is provided which underlies and is in axial alignment with the central passage. The pipe gripping assembly rotates independent of the motor for purposes of orientation.
