Publication number: 20160120518Abstract: A biopsy system is discloses that includes a percutaneous biopsy needle and an inner cannula. The percutaneous biopsy needle includes an internal passageway. At a distal end, the percutaneous biopsy needle includes an expandable section. A distal section of the internal passageway of the percutaneous biopsy needle, which corresponds to the expandable section, is tapered to enable the expandable section to expand and collapse as the inner cannula is positioned within and/or moves through the tapered distal section. The inner cannula may be configured to aspirate a sample from a location of interest within a subject's body and, in some embodiments, may cooperate with the distal end of the percutaneous biopsy needle in a manner that facilitates removal of the sample from the subject's body. Biopsy methods are also disclosed.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 4, 2015Publication date: May 5, 2016Inventors: Leroy D. Geist, Shawn P. Fojtik

Patent number: 9107691Abstract: A rooter includes a rotatable element, an actuator for causing the rotatable element to rotate, and a coupling feature for rotatably coupling an elongated medical instrument to the rotatable element. The rotatable element may be at least partially contained within the interior of a housing or another element that remains substantially stationary as the actuator causes the rotatable element to rotate. The rooter may be used with a variety of elongated medical instruments, such as needles, drill bits, trocars, wires, catheters, tubes, and other elongated instruments that are used to enable or effect medical procedures within the body of a subject. The rooter may be used for a variety of purposes, including, without limitation, the introduction of an elongated medical instrument into the body of a subject or its removal from the subject's body; removing, breaking up, or eliminating obstructions (e.g., blood clots, plaques, etc.) from the body of a subject; and obtaining samples from a subject's body.Type: GrantFiled: March 3, 2011Date of Patent: August 18, 2015Assignee: Distal Access, LLCInventor: Shawn P. Patent number: 9022971Abstract: An apparatus that includes two syringes, or a “double barrel syringe,” includes one syringe that injects or infuses while the other syringe aspirates. In the double barrel syringe, injection and aspiration may be effected by a single action. The double barrel syringe may include a handle with two members. A first member of such a handle includes one arm that pivotally couples to a plunger of a first syringe and another arm that pivotally couples to a barrel of a second syringe. A second member of the handle includes one arm that pivotally couples to a barrel of the first syringe and another arm that pivotally couples to a plunger of the second syringe. Patent number: 8992482Abstract: The present invention includes syringes with valves. The valves control communication between the interior of a barrel of the syringe and the exterior of the barrel. In syringes that include two valves, the valves may be oriented opposite one another, such that one of the valves may enable fluid to flow into the interior of the barrel of the syringe while preventing fluid from flowing in the opposite direction, while the other valve may enable fluid to flow out of the interior of the barrel while preventing fluid from flowing in the opposite direction. Alternatively, a syringe may include a single valve, which is carried at or near a distal end of its plunger. Methods for using such syringes, including, but not limited to, manual pulsed aspiration methods and manual pulsed delivery methods are also disclosed.Type: GrantFiled: March 12, 2010Date of Patent: March 31, 2015Assignee: Control Medical Technology, LLCInventor: Shawn P.
