  • Patent number: 8979931
Abstract: A method of replacing a nucleus pulposus material wherein curable nucleus pulposus material is injected into a balloon in an intervertebral space. The balloon has an inlet port and an outlet port that are connected to a pressure-measuring device. After the catheter is placed in the intervertebral space, the balloon is filled with a radio-opaque solution until the desired balloon volume is attained. The nucleus replacement material is then fed into the inlet port of the balloon, while the radiopaque agent is allowed to leave via the outlet port. Once the balloon is completely filled and curing of the curable nucleus replacement material is accomplished, the catheter and ports are removed, and the annular defect can be sealed.

  • Patent number: 8900305
Abstract: An intervertebral implant having an endplate that can be slidably expanded following its placement in the intervertebral space. The endplate comprises a pair of planks that are slidably received within respective recesses of a base portion of the endplate. During insertion of the implant into the intervertebral space, the planks are set in a contracted position within respective recesses of a base portion of the endplate. This provides the implant with a relatively small profile that is suitable for MIS procedures. Once the implant has been inserted, the planks are slid outward from the recesses to an expanded position that increases the footprint of the implant endplate. This expansion increases the stability of the implant.

  • Patent number: 8608746
Abstract: Instruments and methods are provided for manipulating a bone anchor and a spinal fixation element. The instruments and methods disclosed herein are particularly suited to facilitate rotation of a bone anchor relative to another bone to correct the angular rotation of the vertebrae attached to the bone anchor. The instrument does not require the spinal fixation element to be inserted into the bone anchor prior to manipulation. The instrument further may be used in the insertion of the spinal fixation element into the bone anchor.

  • Patent number: 8414588
Abstract: A device for delivery of a spinal rod to a bone anchor includes an inner tube and an outer tube disposed about at least a portion of the inner tube. The inner tube is adjustable relative to the outer tube along the longitudinal axis of the outer tube between a first position and a second position in which the distal end of the inner tube contacts the bone anchor. A spring is interposed between the inner tube and the outer tube to bias the inner tube distally. A locking member is coupled to the outer tube and is adjustable between a proximal position in which the locking member is spaced apart from the inner tube and a distal position in which the locking member inhibits proximal axial motion of the inner tube relative to the outer tube.

  • Patent number: 8377072
Abstract: Devices for implanting a prosthetic device, such as an artificial spinal implant, are provided. The installation tool can include a body, a pair of opposed levers, an optional implant holder disposed between the levers, a drive rod at least partially disposed within the body and able to be coupled to the implant holder and/or implant, and a female threaded member associated with the body and selectively engageable with the drive rod. As the drive rod translates along a longitudinal axis of the installation tool, the implant holder and/or implant separates the levers and distracts adjacent vertebral bodies to position a prosthetic device therebetween. The implant holder and/or implant can be longitudinally advanced in rotation and/or translation modes.

  • Publication number: 20120078373
Abstract: An angled fixation device, such as an angled screw. This angled fixation device may be used by the surgeon to secure a spacer to a spinal disc space. The proximal end portion of the angled fixation device is driven perpendicular to the anterior wall of the spacer, and so is parallel to the vertebral endplates and in-line with the inserter. The distal end portion of the angled fixation device is oriented at about a 45 degree angle (plus or minus 30 degrees) to the vertebral endplate it enters.

  • Patent number: 7927373
Abstract: An intervertebral disc prosthesis comprises a first prosthesis component, a second prosthesis component, and an intermediate prosthesis component positioned between the first prosthesis component and the second prosthesis component. The first prosthesis component and second prosthesis component are configured to rotate upon the intermediate prosthesis component. The first prosthesis component includes a vertebra facing surface with a central channel formed in the vertebra facing surface. The central channel is designed and dimensioned to engage an insertion arm of a disc insertion tool. The first prosthesis component also includes at least one indentation configured to engage at least one retention arm of the disc insertion tool. The at least one indentation of the first prosthesis component may comprises at least one groove formed in a collar of the first prosthesis component. In one embodiment, the first and second prosthesis components are plates and the intermediate prosthesis component is a core.

  • Publication number: 20090062860
Abstract: The present invention provides an implant that can be inserted on top of a previously placed spinal fixation element. The implant includes a bone anchor and a connector body. The bone anchor includes a proximal head and a distal shaft extending along a longitudinal axis configured to engage bone. The connector body is configured to engage the proximal head of bone anchor and engage a spinal fixation element offset from longitudinal axis of the bone anchor shaft. Because, the implant is inserted over the spinal fixation element, direct visualization of the surgical site is available during insertion. In addition, the implant may provide tactile or audible feedback indicating that the spinal fixation element has been engaged by the implant.
