  • Patent number: 9981063
Abstract: A composite for osteochondral defect repair includes a porous scaffold and a periosteal graft secured to a surface of the scaffold. The composite provides cartilage growth from autologous periosteum chondrogenesis. Biological resurfacing of large osteochondral defects, or a complete joint is feasible using the porous scaffold/autologous periosteal composite. The use of this composite eliminates the necessity of using normal cartilage surface as a donor site and its respective associated morbidity. In one form, the strong bone integration capacity of a porous metal (e.g., tantalum) scaffold and the high grade of integration observed from periosteal chondrogenesis into the normal cartilage eliminates the lack of chondral-chondral integration observed in the autologous osteochondral graft technique.

  • Patent number: 8206389
Abstract: A method of bone fixation. A guide device may be disposed such that a first portion of the guide device is disposed longitudinally in a medullary canal of a bone and such that a second portion of the guide device is disposed outside the bone and defines a transverse path across the bone and intersecting the medullary canal. A transverse hole may be formed in the bone along the transverse path, and a fastener may be disposed in the transverse hole. A rod may be placed longitudinally in the medullary canal such that a threaded portion of the rod enters an aperture of the fastener and engages the fastener at the aperture to lock the rod to the fastener. The first portion of the guide device may be removed from the medullary canal after the step of forming a transverse hole and before the step of placing a rod.

  • Patent number: 6709459
Abstract: A prosthesis for the radius bone in the arm of a patient includes a head shaped for engagement with the capitellum of a humerus bone and the radial notch of the ulna. It also has a curved stem that extends from the head and is tapered with a distally decreasing cross section for insertion into the medullary canal of the radius. A system for implanting the prosthesis requires a resection guide for placing the forearm of the patient in a precise anatomical orientation for resection of the radius bone. The resection guide includes a notched alignment rod attached to an adjustable flange and a reference flange for aligning the forearm for a cut of the radius bone perpendicular with the axis of rotation of the radius bone about the ulna, and for measuring the size of the resection and prosthesis.
