  • Publication number: 20070234114
Abstract: Enhanced performance is provided for a computer system with partially degraded hardware. A performance deconfiguration event is identified for a hardware item. The hardware item is marked in a performance deconfiguration state. When there is at least one fully working spare available for the hardware item of the performance deconfiguration event, then a fully working spare is activated. Then the hardware item is moved to a performance degraded hardware pool after the fully working spare is activated.

  • Publication number: 20070179635
Abstract: Embodiments of the present invention provide methods and systems for optimizing system configuration after replacement of one or more defective devices in the system. Upon detection of a failure in the system, one or more devices may be identified as failing devices. The devices may be grouped in an error log maintained by the operating system, and excluded from the system during configuration. A priority for each device in the group may indicate the likelihood that the device is the failure causing device. When a device from a group is replaced, devices connected with the replaced device may be cleared for configuration into the system, thereby eliminating the need for manual intervention to clear the devices.

  • Publication number: 20060259757
Abstract: A method, apparatus and computer program product are provided for implementing initial program load to configure system hardware in a computer system. During an initial program load of the computer system, selected hardware components are marked with a temporary state of non-functional. At least one policy check is performed based upon a system type for the computer system to determine system availability. When system availability is identified, then the selected hardware components are permanently deconfigured and the initial program load of the computer system is continued.

  • Publication number: 20050229039
Abstract: A system and method for fast system recovery that bypasses diagnostic routines by disconnecting failed hardware from the system before rebooting. Failed hardware and hardware that will be affected by removal of the failed hardware of the system are disconnected from the system. The system is restarted, and because the failed hardware is disconnected, diagnostic routines may safely be eliminated from the reboot process.

  • Publication number: 20050039068
Abstract: A method, apparatus, and computer instructions in a data processing system for managing clocks. The functionality of clock sources in the data processing system is verified to identify a set of valid clock sources in response to beginning an initial load process. Hardware is initialized in the data processing system using a valid clock source from the set of valid clock sources.
