  • Publication number: 20090152177
Abstract: An optical paper sorting system uses diffuse reflectance to identify a sheet of paper, conveyed on a conveyor, as either white or groundwood grade, or white, colour, or mixed grade. In sorting, paper that does not meet a specified minimum requirement, for example, having less than a maximum amount of lignin, is mechanically diverted from a stream of input paper waste to a rejection bin. Otherwise, the paper is directed to a collection bin. The optical paper sorting method may be used to sort paper into different grades that is then recombined to produce a predetermined grade of sorted waste paper.

  • Patent number: 7081594
Abstract: An optical paper sorting system uses diffuse reflectance to identify a sheet of paper, conveyed on a conveyor, as either white or groundwood grade. A light source illuminates a sheet of paper and an optical collection system collects and filters the light diffusely reflected from the sheet of paper. The reflected light strikes a detector which produces a photoelectric current proportional to the intensity of the filtered light in a specific region in the electromagnetic spectrum, preferably ultraviolet. The signal from the detector may be digitized and processed by a computer which classifies the sheet as either white or groundwood, and activates an ejection device to produce an air blast for diverting whichever grade is selected for ejection.

  • Patent number: 6634578
Abstract: A mechanical system that separates bundles of paper and presents the separated paper on a conveyor in a single layer fashion, for further processing. The paper is accumulated in a hopper and fed into the mechanical separating mechanism in a batch mode. When sufficient volume has been admitted to the container, the inflow port is closed and the mechanical separating impeller are activated to rotate in the same direction, imparting bidirectional forces on compacted bundles of sheets or shreds, causing them to deaggregate. Upon completion of the separation cycle, the separated sheets are expelled through an outlet port and conveyed to a drop chute for further singulation, from which the singulated sheets may be deposited onto one or more conveyor belts for sorting.
