  • Patent number: 6203921
Abstract: A multilayer polyester film having at least 7 layers which comprises alternating layers of polyethylene terephthalate and polyethylene naphthalate. Biaxial orientation and subsequent restrained heat setting of these materials results in thin films with tensile moduli in both stretch directions well in excess of the values obtained with monolithic films of either material. In some embodiments, a slippery surface is imparted to the film without the use of conventional slip agents.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: September 15, 1998
Date of Patent: March 20, 2001
    Assignee: 3M Innovative Properties Company
Inventors: Brandt K. Carter, Raymond L. Lucking, James A. Klein, Sheldon J. Israel
  • Patent number: 5968666
Abstract: A multilayer polyester film, and a method for making the same, is provided. The film consists of alternating layers of polyethylene terephthalate and polyethylene naphthalate. Biaxial orientation and subsequent restrained heat setting of these materials results in thin films with tensile moduli in both stretch directions well in excess of the values obtained with monolithic films of either material. In some embodiments, a slippery surface is imparted to the film without the use of conventional slip agents.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: March 8, 1996
Date of Patent: October 19, 1999
    Assignee: 3M Innovative Properties Company
Inventors: Brandt K. Carter, Raymond L. Lucking, James A. Klein, Sheldon J. Israel
  • Patent number: 5795528
Abstract: A method for making multilayer polyester films is provided wherein a slippery surface is imparted to the film, without the use of slip agents, through appropriate crystallization and orientation of the film.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: March 8, 1996
Date of Patent: August 18, 1998
Assignee: Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing Company
Inventors: James A. Klein, Brandt K. Carter, Sheldon J. Israel, Raymond L. Lucking
  • Patent number: 5783283
Abstract: A multilayer film is provided with a slippery surface layer by crystallization in an underlying layer which results in the deformation of an overlying surface layer without the use of particulate slip agents. The films may be formed by alternating layers of a naphthalene dicarboxylic acid polyester and a terephthalic acid polyester.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: March 8, 1996
Date of Patent: July 21, 1998
Assignee: Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing Company
Inventors: James A. Klein, Brandt K. Carter, Sheldon J. Israel, Raymond L. Lucking
