  • Patent number: 8079274
Abstract: A system and method for measuring torque on a rotating component, comprising of signal-producing components which are applied to the rotating component, and a means for obtaining the signals produced by said signal producing components, in which at least two signal producing components are applied to the rotating component with some linear separation between the two signal producing components and their corresponding devices for obtaining signals produced, such that torque applied to the rotating component will cause a change in phase between the signals received from each of the signal-producing components and thus permit the measurement of torque based on this change in phase; one embodiment of this invention comprising two magnetic rings, one at either end of a driveshaft, with sensor coils placed near to each magnetic ring such that an alternating electrical current is produced, the comparative phase between these currents permitting measurement of torque on the driveshaft.

  • Patent number: 7880473
Abstract: System and methods for monitoring electric machines are provided. A magnetic field associated with the electric machine is measured at one or more points external to the electric machine, wherein a respective magnetic field value is associated with each of the one or more points. The one or more measured magnetic field values are compared to one or more corresponding expected values, and a determination of whether a fault is present in the electric machine is made based at least in part on the comparison.

  • Publication number: 20090219030
Abstract: Embodiments of the invention can include methods and systems for detecting rotor field ground faults in rotating machinery. In one embodiment, a system can include a rotor of the rotating machine comprising a plurality of field windings substantially disposed therein and a stator of the rotating machine comprising a plurality of stator windings substantially disposed therein, with an air gap existing between the rotor and the stator. The system can include a high-impedance grounding circuit at least temporarily connected between the rotor and a ground. Additionally, the system can include an air gap flux probe positioned at least temporarily between the rotor and the stator for measuring a magnetic flux density generated in the air gap during operation of the rotating machine. Finally, the system can further include an analyzer in electrical communication with the air gap flux probe for receiving an output of the air gap flux probe.

  • Publication number: 20080036336
Abstract: An apparatus and method for monitoring vibration of the stator core and/or the conductors of electrical machinery during its operation involves positioning vibration sensors at the stator bar ends and operatively coupling the vibration sensors to a central controller. The vibration sensors are axially disposed along the length of an optical fiber and form an interferometer with a reference reflector. The central controller receives a reflected signal from each sensor which represents a measure of the vibration occurring in the stator core and/or the conductors at the location of the sensor.
