    Abstract: Disclosed are composite rods that include cores and capping layers surrounding the cores. A capping layer may surround and be bonded to a core, and may beneficially provide improved wear resistance to the rod. The capping layer can include a high performance polymer and a hydrophobic lubricant. In addition to improving wear resistance, the capping layer may include components that can advantageously modify the surface energy of the capping layer as desired for particular applications.
