  • Patent number: 4609252
Abstract: The specification describes a process for forming an organic optical waveguide device of predetermined planar geometry. First a layer of an organic photoactive composition (for example, phenylglyoxylic acid or a derivative thereof) is deposited to a predetermined thickness on a given substrate. The photoactive composition is characterized by being capable of forming a waveguiding material upon polymerization. Next, the deposited photoactive layer is exposed to a beam of ultraviolet radiation through a mask which defines the desired planar geometry for the device to be formed. Finally, the exposed photoactive layer is developed to leave behind a portion of the photoactive material which has the desired planar geometry and which is an organic waveguiding material.

  • Patent number: 4428380
Abstract: A method and associated means for producing simultaneous electrical representations of the electrical and acoustical (heart sound) activity of the heart, in which a pickup device and associated circuits produce a full wave rectified symmetrical heart sound signal annotated by pulses developed from the QRS wave of the electrocardiogram signal. The pickup device is designed to permit the direct (unbuffered) application of the pickup electrodes to the skin of the body and to provide a control of the associated circuits when not in contact with the body to shorten response times when the pickup device is placed in contact with the body.

  • Patent number: 4362164
Abstract: A stethoscope transducer applicable as a conventional audio transducer and as a phonocardiogram transducer has a body which on one side mounts an electrode carrying chest bell and which on an opposite side mounts a conventional chest bell. A microphone and a rotor assembly are mounted in a cavity in the body. The microphone and earpiece connections on the body communicate through passages in the rotor assembly with the electrode carrying chest bell when the rotor assembly is in a first position and with the conventional chest bell when the rotor assembly is rotated to a second position. These are three electrodes, two being pickup electrodes which each occupy one quadrant of the chest bell rim in diametrically opposite positions. The third electrode is on the rim intermediate the pickup electrodes. The rim is of a non-wettable material providing a hydrophobic surface.

  • Patent number: 4332879
Abstract: The specification describes a process for depositing a film of controlled composition on a substrate by using a metallo-organic photoresist in which the organic portion is combusted by heating in a reactive atmosphere to leave a residual deposit of a desired substance on the substrate. The film may be formed as a patterned or unpatterned layer. In addition, the residual deposit may be subsequently subjected to a chemical reaction to alter its composition.
