Patent number: 7184206Abstract: An optical amplifier and a laser generator based on the fiber side-polished technology having a high pumping efficiency, a low noise figure and a small footprint are provided in this application. The optical amplifier and the laser, which have a very long effective interaction length in conjunction with highly doped Erbium glass attached to its surface and an addition of a slanted fiber grating inscribed in the guiding core at the polished region can spatially separate the signal and pump power to simultaneously improve the pumping efficiency and optimize the penetrated depth of the signal evanescent-field. The spontaneous emission is kept from being amplified and therefore a high quality amplified signal is produced.Type: GrantFiled: April 28, 2004Date of Patent: February 27, 2007Assignee: National Chiao Tung UniversityInventors: Nan-Kuang Chen, Sien Chi, Shiao-Min Tseng, Yinchieh Lai

Publication number: 20050018970Abstract: A method for coupling a planar lightwave circuit and an optical fiber. A side-polished optical fiber is formed with a polished surface at its side. When the side-polished optical fiber and the planar lightwave circuit are coupled, the polished surface of the side-polished optical fiber is adhered to the planar lightwave circuit. According to an evanescent field interaction, signals transmitted in the planar lightwave circuit can be coupled to the side-polished optical fiber. Additionally, signals transmitted in the side-polished optical fiber can be coupled to the planar lightwave circuit.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 14, 2004Publication date: January 27, 2005Inventors: Shiao-Min Tseng, Nan-Kuang Chen

Publication number: 20040101249Abstract: A method for manufacturing an all-fiber device. The method comprises the following steps. First, a recess with a predetermined radius is formed on a semiconductor substrate. A first optical fiber is then fixed in the recess by an adhesive. Subsequently, a cladding layer of the first optical fiber is polished to form a first side-polished optical fiber with a first polished surface near a core region of the first optical fiber. Then, the first optical fiber is separated from the semiconductor substrate by a liquid. Like the first side-polished optical fiber, a second side-polished optical fiber with a second polished surface is formed. Finally, after the first polished surface is aligned and in contact with the second polished surface, the first side-polished optical fiber and the second side-polished optical fiber are fused to form the all-fiber device. A coupling region is formed between the first and second polished surfaces.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 20, 2003Publication date: May 27, 2004Inventors: Shiao-Min Tseng, Nan-Kuang Chen

Patent number: 6665473Abstract: A method of manufacturing a compact fiber coupler. On a semiconductor substrate, a V-groove with a radius curvature R is formed. Then, a glue is positioned at both sides of the V-groove, and the glue is absorbed from both sides of the V-groove by capillarity. A first optical fiber and a second optical fiber are respectively fixed in the V-groove so that the cladding of the first optical fiber and the second optical fiber can be polished to form a first side-polished region and a second side-polished region. Thus, the compact fiber coupler is accomplished by aligning and fusing the first side-polished region and the second side-polished region together, in which a coupling region is formed between the first side-polished region and the second side-polished region.Type: GrantFiled: November 8, 2001Date of Patent: December 16, 2003Inventors: Shiao-Min Tseng, Nan-Kuang Chen

Patent number: 5809188Abstract: A tunable optical fiber filter or reflector is composed of a single-mode optical fiber having UV-induced fiber gratings in its core region. A planar surface is formed by a mechanical polishing technique such that the planar surface is contiguous to the core region of the optical fiber. The planar surface is covered with a material having a refractive index close to the refractive index of the optical fiber. As the refractive index of the material is changed, the tuning of the reflection or transmission spectra of the optical fiber filter or reflector is attained. The tunable optical fiber filter or reflector is used in optical communication systems, sensoring systems, or as external cavities of lasers.Type: GrantFiled: March 14, 1997Date of Patent: September 15, 1998Assignee: National Science CouncilInventors: Shiao-Min Tseng, Ssu-Pin Ma, Kuang-Yu Hsu, Yinchieh Lai, Kuochou Tai

Patent number: 5781675Abstract: A method for preparing a fiber-optic polarizer involves a first step in which the cladding layer of a single-mode optical fiber is side-polished to form a planar surface contiguous to the core region of the single-mode optical fiber. The planar surface is formed thereon a buffer dielectric/metal composite thin film, or the planar surface is coated by sputtering with a metal layer which is then coated with a medium having a refractive index matching to that of the optical fiber. The polishing of the single-mode optical fiber is done by using a semiconductor substrate having one or more V-shaped recesses having a large curvature radius.Type: GrantFiled: March 14, 1997Date of Patent: July 14, 1998Assignee: National Science CouncilInventors: Shiao-Min Tseng, Ssu-Pin Ma, Kun-Fa Chen, Kuang-Yu Hsu
