  • Patent number: 4355541
Abstract: A magnetic gyroscope includes a flexible rotating disk having a plurality of magnetic regions formed in or on the periphery of the disk. Typically four pairs of magnetic sensors are disposed about the disk at 90.degree. angles with respect to each other to detect the magnetic regions as the disk rotates, each sensor pair including a sensor above the disk and one below it. The sensors detect changes in the separation of the disk from the sensors and supply this information to an amplifier to control the gyroscope or the structure within which the gyroscope is mounted.

  • Patent number: 4344004
Abstract: A transducer for detecting the position of a mass includes a base, a mass disposed above the base and ohmically separated therefrom, a piezoelectric transducer for inducing relative motion between the base and the mass, typically by suspending the mass on a fluid oscillating at high frequency, an electric field generator on one of the base or the mass, and a conducting antenna on the other of the base or mass for detecting the position of the electric field with respect to the base. The oscillating fluid both supports the mass and generates displacement currents by creating relative motion between the mass and the base.

  • Patent number: 4339780
Abstract: An apparatus for controlling vibration in a structural element includes a first magnet attached to the structural element, a sensing device positioned to detect motion of the structural element, and a vibration control device connected to receive information from the sensing device concerning motion of the structural element. The vibration control device includes a second magnet spaced apart from the first magnet and a coil for varying the magnetic field between the first magnet and the second magnet. The coil, in response to signals from the sensing device, alters the strength of the magnetic field and thereby controls vibration of the structural element.

  • Patent number: 4224540
Abstract: A displacement current sensor for generating electrical signals representative of relative motion between a conductor and an electric field source. The sensor includes means for generating an electric field and electrically conductive means positioned for interaction with the electric field, the field generating means and the electrically conductive means being relatively movable so that variations in the field encountered by the electrically conductive means induces a displacement current, as opposed to a conduction current, in the electrically conductive means. The field generating means preferably is fabricated from an electret formed in any one of a wide variety of geometrical shapes, such as planar, cylindrical or special geometrical configurations; the electrically conductive means may comprise one or more plates, wires, rods, or other special shapes.

  • Patent number: 4219940
Abstract: A gyroless vertical indicating device which tracks the local gravity vector independent of horizontal acceleration. A compound pendulum and an angular accelerometer each has a single rotational degree of freedom about a common axis. Rotational motion of the pendulum and of the angular accelerometer about the axis is coupled by a quartz fiber suspension therealong. A signal representative of the relative angular velocity between the pendulum and the angular accelerometer is fed back to a torquing system which maintains the pendulum's orientation along the local gravity vector.

  • Patent number: 4164149
Abstract: A method and system for monitoring the angular deformation of structural elements in a composite structure in response to imposed mechanical vibrations in which the structure is part of the monitoring system.A plurality of angular motion signal generating sensors are provided at different selected locations in a composite structure, each sensor being associated to a corresponding structural element. Signals output from the sensors in response to vibrations propagated within the composite structure are detected and a vibration signature for the entire structure is established. The sensor outputs are subsequently monitored and compared with the previously established vibration signature to detect differences therebetween designating changes in the vibration response and potential structural failures. The angular motion sensors employ a magnet and a coil in which a voltage and current are induced in response to angular deflections of the structural member to which the sensor is attached.
