    Abstract: When a deceleration intention detector detects that an occupant has apprehension about a condition ahead of his own vehicle and attempts to decelerate the own vehicle, a detection area setter enlarges a detection area in which a control object is detected, upon a command from a control object determinator. Therefore, a new control object such as a cutting-in vehicle can be more reliably detected in accordance with an increase in an amount of attention which the occupant pays to the condition ahead of the own vehicle. As a result, a vehicle controller changes a vehicle control content of the own vehicle, thereby performing an appropriate vehicle control with respect to the newly detected control object to eliminate a sense of discomfort of the occupant.

    Abstract: An object recognition system including a radar, an image sensor and a controller is provided. The radar determines the position of an object, and the image sensor captures an image of the object. The controller sets a processing area within the image captured by the image sensor based on the position of the object determined by the radar and a predetermined size for the object to be recognized. The controller extracts horizontal and vertical edges from the processing area, and preferably judges whether each of the extracted edges belongs to the object based on characteristics of the object to be recognized. The controller then recognizes the outline of the object based on the edges judged to belong to the object. The object can be recognized by determining upper, lower, left and right ends of the object. On the other hand, the controller recognizes lane lines defining the lane in which the vehicle mounting the system of the invention is running.

    Abstract: An apparatus and method for measuring a temperature of a high temperature liquid contained in a furnace. An optical fiber covered with a metallic tube is inserted through a passageway inside a nozzle arranged on a furnace wall of the furnace. The nozzle communicates with an interior of the furnace containing the liquid, and gas is supplied into the passageway inside the nozzle to prevent the nozzle from clogging. The metal-covered optical fiber is fed through the passageway inside the nozzle into the liquid such that spectral light radiated from the liquid enters a tip of the metal-covered optical fiber and is propagated therealong. The temperature of the liquid is determined by a radiation thermometer, coupled to the metal-covered optical fiber, based on the spectral light propagated along the metal-covered optical fiber.

    Abstract: The present invention relates to a method which may decarburize high Cr molten metal for a short period of time under an atmospheric pressure, while checking loss of Cr by its oxidation. A basic feature of the invention is to blow from the furnace top lance a decarburizing O.sub.2 diluted by an inert gas into the high Cr molten metal supported in a container as well as blow the inert gas from bottom tuyeres so as to forcibly agitate the molten metal. Another feature of the invention is to control a slag amount during the above decarburizing blowing so as to check the Cr oxidation loss. A further object of the invention is to carry out a denitrification in the above decarburization, thereby to produce low N molten metal while checking the loss by Cr oxidation.
