  • Patent number: 8270357
Abstract: Methods and systems are provided for EV-DO femtocells to use proximity to prioritize service to access terminals. In an embodiment, a femtocell assigns a first range of MAC IDs to a first group of access terminals, where the first group is those access terminals that are less than a threshold distance from the femtocell. The femtocell assigns a second range of MAC IDs to a second group of access terminals, where the second group is those access terminals that are more than the threshold distance from the femtocell. The femtocell repeatedly transmits (1) a first reverse activity bit (RAB) to the first group and (2) a second RAB to the second group, and measures reverse noise rise (RNR) on a femtocell carrier. If the measured RNR is greater than the threshold, the femtocell responsively (1) clears the first RAB and (2) sets the second RAB.

  • Patent number: 8245088
Abstract: Methods and systems are provided for implementing quality of service (QoS) by using Hybrid ARQ (HARQ) response for triggering the EV-DO reverse activity bit (RAB). In an embodiment, an access node provides service to a plurality of access terminals, the plurality including a select group of one or more access terminals. The access node detects that it has, over a time period, sent more than a threshold number of HARQ negative acknowledgements (NACKs) with respect to reverse-link communication of the select group, and responsively (1) sets the RAB for the first wireless coverage area and (2) instructs the select group of access terminals to ignore the RAB. The select group ignores the RAB, while the rest of the access terminals obey the RAB.

  • Publication number: 20120196613
Abstract: In a wireless communication system, a wireless access node provides a wireless communication service to wireless communication devices over a first frequency band class and over a second frequency band class. A control system identifies a subset of the wireless communication devices operating over the first frequency band class that have been in an idle mode for a time period that exceeds a threshold. The wireless access node transfers a signal to the subset of the wireless communication devices to transition from the first frequency band class to the second frequency band class. The wireless access node then provides the wireless communication service to at least some of the subset of the wireless communication devices over the second frequency band class.

  • Patent number: 8213915
Abstract: A method, system, and computer readable media are provided for maintaining a mobile session. A session identifier and an associated idle time period are created by the gateway as part of a session header between a wireless device and a content source. When an interruption occurs before a session request for information or data has been completed, the partially transferred information or data is buffered on the gateway, along with its associated session identifier. When the wireless device reconnects, using the associated session identifier header, then the buffered information or data is transferred from the gateway, to the wireless device. The resumed transfer of information or data occurs at the point where the partial transfer stopped, when the interruption occurred. The information or data is completely transferred from the content source to the wireless device, via the gateway.

  • Patent number: 8204000
Abstract: Methods and systems are provided for achieving quality of service (QoS) by using the reverse activity bit (RAB) in creation of neighbor lists for selected access terminals. In an embodiment, an access node provides service to a plurality of access terminals in a first wireless coverage area. The access node maintains and broadcasts a standard neighbor list identifying neighboring wireless coverage areas, each having a respective RAB. The access node generates a QoS neighbor list, consisting of one or more coverage areas from the standard neighbor list having a RAB that is cleared. The access node transmits the QoS neighbor list to a subset of the access terminals. Each access terminal in the subset uses the QoS neighbor list in place of the standard neighbor list, while the other access terminals use the standard neighbor list.

  • Patent number: 8149774
Abstract: Disclosed in this document is an improved mechanism for notifying mobile stations that they should not seek to initiate a communication in a given wireless coverage area. The solution is to use a specially designated PN-offset as the indicator that a problem situation exists in the coverage area and that a mobile station should not seek to initiate communication in the coverage area. When a RAN detects a problem condition in a coverage area, the RAN changes the PN-offset of the coverage area to be a reserved PN-offset, and mobile stations are programmed to not seek service on any reserved PN-offset. Advantageously, the process helps stop mobile stations from operating in a problem coverage area without requiring the mobile stations to first lock onto the PN-offset of the coverage area and to then receive some sort of overhead message directing the mobile stations to not operate in the coverage area.
