    Abstract: It is an object to provide a drive unit capable of properly responding to an access request from a microprocessor side and an access request from a display section side, and further of realizing a high-speed operation and a low power consumption operation. When an MPU access request from an MPU side and an LCD access request from an LCD side take place, an arbitration circuit (160) makes arbitration to start an access operation to a RAM (100) according to one of the access requests. Additionally, a memory access monitor signal /BUSY for monitoring an access state to the RAM is outputted to an external terminal to be inputted to a hardware wait control terminal of the MPU. The arbitration circuit starts the access operation on condition that a RAM precharge operation reaches completion. The MPU sets a start address and an end address on a column and a page and issues a writing start command, whereupon display data in a display area is rewritten automatically.

    Abstract: A driving method of a display device in which the number of voltage levels of scanning lines during a non-selection period is only one, and the voltage level of a data line corresponding to a display element that present no image is set to the voltage level of the scanning lines during the non-selection period. The power consumption of the display device is thus reduced. A minimum area of the entire screen of the device is used for image presentation while the remaining area is set to a display-off state (display-off mode) using the above driving method, and thus the power consumption of the display device, for example, in a standby state is reduced. Each of the display-enabled area and the display-off area is flexibly set. A combination of a multi-line driving method and the above driving method helps further reduce power consumption.

First and second frame memory devices accumulate display data representing the image to be displayed, such that reading the display data of a first frame period from the first frame memory device is performed substantially simultaneously with the writing of the display data of a second frame period into the second memory device.

    Abstract: A communication apparatus has a telephone set and a data communication unit integral or combined with the telephone set and is capable of sending a call through dialing means of the telephone set. The communication apparatus comprises switching means for selectively connecting a telephone line to a line of the telephone set or a line of the data communication unit and detection means connected to the telephone set for detecting a predetermined protocol signal sent back from a destination station. Control means controls the switching means such that the switching means connects the telephone line to the telephone set at the time of calling to enable dialing using the dialing means of the telephone set, and switches the telephone line to the data communication unit when the detection means detects the protocol signal, in order to start data communication.
