A metal-based composite material having such a double-clad structure that a core material is sandwiched between a pair of skin materials each composed of an aluminum plate in such a manner that the core material is closely adhered to the skin materials, wherein the core material comprises a matrix produced by consolidating an aluminum powder by applying a pressure and tungsten particles dispersed in the matrix, and wherein the tungsten particles are contained in the core material in an amount of 5 to 70 vol %. A method for producing a metal-based composite material, which comprises filling a mixed powder of an aluminum powder that constitutes a matrix and tungsten particles into an aluminum case and then extending the mixed powder by applying a pressure.
