Abstract: This invention relates to a catalyst assembly for cleaning an exhaust gas wherein the catalyst and the carrier therefor are secured inside a catalyst muffler by means of expandable ceramic material. This invention also provides a method for making such a catalyst assembly.

Abstract: A silencer which may be arranged in place in an exhaust system of an internal combustion engine includes walls forming the main body of the silencer; a first separator supported by the walls to define a rear chamber therebetween; a second separator supported by the walls to define a first intermediate chamber between the walls and the first and second separators; a flame-extinguishing device supported by the walls to define a second intermediate chamber in combination with the walls, the second separator and the flame-extinguishing device as well as to define a front chamber between the walls and the flame-extinguishing device; an inlet pipe in fluid communication with the front chamber whereby an exhaust gas may flow from the inlet pipe into the front chamber; an outlet pipe in fluid communication with the first intermediate chamber whereby the exhaust gas may flow out of the first intermediate chamber through the outlet pipe; and an inner pipe having a plurality of apertures formed therein.

Abstract: For use in a muffler of an internal combustion engine improved flame-out apparatus includes first and second L-shaped screens each having a longitudinal section and a transverse section. The transverse sections are axially spaced apart and the space therebetween is occupied by a pair of axially spaced apart, transversely oriented perforated partition plates and flame extinguishing means.

Abstract: An exhaust gas cleaning device purifier for use in an internal combustion engine of a multicylinder type, comprising a housing to be disposed between exhaust ports of a cylinder head and an exhaust pipe in which housing a catalyst container is enclosed, the catalyst container consisting of two cylinders between which catalyst is filled, a control valve being provided on the catalyst container for passing a part of exhaust gas through the catalyst, thereby a part of the exhaust gas is passed or not through the catalyst in accordance with the conditions of the engine.

Abstract: An exhaust gas purifier for internal combustion engine, has a porous filter impregnated with a desired adsorbent or a porous filter made of bulk metal catalyst. Instead of extending perpendicular to the main axial direction of the exhaust pipe, the filter extends axially and is mounted on a metal screen cylinder having a baffle which diverts the flow of exhaust gas toward and through the cylinder and filter. In this manner, the exhaust gas flows axially into the screen cylinder and then passes radially through the filter to a second flow passage which is connected to the purifier outlet. Very low back pressure is obtained with this arrangement.
