  • Patent number: 8006562
Abstract: A receiver receives an acoustic wave in an atmospheric pressure measuring apparatus. Since a variation in the intensity of an acoustic wave reflects a variation in the atmospheric pressure, the atmospheric pressure can be measured based on the intensity of the acoustic wave received at the receiver. The atmospheric pressure can in this manner easily be measured with a simplified structure.

  • Publication number: 20090284870
Abstract: An arm has one end coupled to a head suspension and the other end defining a domed surface in a head suspension assembly. The domed surface establishes point contact against the side surface of a head slider. The arm is designed to restrain the direction of application of a force along an imaginary plane including the back surface of the head slider. A piezoelectric element is bonded to the arm at a position between the one end and the other end of the arm. The head suspension assembly allows the arm to curve in response to expansion/shrinkage of the piezoelectric element. A driving force is applied from the arm to the head slider based on the curvature of the arm. Since point contact is established between the arm and the side surface of the head slider, the curvature of the arm cannot be restrained.

  • Patent number: 7551399
Abstract: A plate member is made of a metal material lighter than stainless steel in a suspension for a head slider. This leads to a reduction in the weight of the suspension. The natural frequency of the suspension is thus raised. Moreover, the viscoelastic member is interposed between the front surface of the plate member and the back surface of the flexure. This structure allows either the plate member or the flexure to act as a base and the other to act as a constraining member. In other words, the plate member, the flexure and the viscoelastic member in combination act as a so-called vibration damper including constraining layers. The viscoelastic member serves to further suppress vibration of the plate member and the flexure.

  • Publication number: 20090122438
Abstract: For a feedforward controller for controlling a position of a magnetic head in a magnetic disk drive, a vibration of the magnetic head is measured in a state in which a magnetic disk is rotated in the magnetic disk drive. From a spectrum of the measured vibration, a flutter frequency which is a frequency of a vibration caused by the magnetic disk fluttering is obtained. A filter is designed for each flutter frequency having a peak of a gain for a respective one of obtained flutter frequencies. The feedforward controller for controlling a position of the magnetic head is obtained by combining filters designed for the respective flutter frequencies.

  • Publication number: 20090052085
Abstract: A head slider has a medium-opposed surface opposed to a storage medium at a distance in a storage apparatus. The medium-opposed surface receives airflow through relative movement between the storage medium and the head slider. The flexure holds the head slider at a predetermined mounting area. The head slider flies above the storage medium in a pitched attitude. A predetermined pitch angle is established in the pitched attitude. An actuator serves to deform the flexure outside the mounting area for the head slider so as to forcefully change the pitched attitude within a predetermined range of a pitch angle. A change in the pitched attitude, namely a change in the pitch angle results in a change in the flying height of the head slider. The flying height can be changed without changing the design of the head slider.

  • Publication number: 20080229842
Abstract: A suspension for a hard disk drive has a vibration sensor which is impervious to influence by external noise, to obtain more stable positioning precision of the head on the suspension. The suspension has a load beam, a vibration sensor sandwiched by a first electrode and a second electrode, and a conductive wiring pattern on the load beam for electrically connecting the first electrode and the second electrode to an external detection circuit. The first electrode is sandwiched by the second electrode via the vibration sensor and a shield layer via an insulating layer. The second electrode and the shield layer are at a same potential.

  • Publication number: 20080049361
Abstract: Connecting pieces extend outward from the support plate in the opposite directions along a crossline. A flexure body is connected to the connecting pieces. A pad is fixed to the support plate at a position ahead of the crossline. A wiring pattern extends from a pad. The wiring pattern defines a first straight portion extending forward from the flexure body along a first straight line. A second straight portion extends along a second straight line intersecting with the first straight line. A curved portion connects the first straight portion to the second straight portion. The curved portion expands outward from at least one of the first and second straight lines. The support plate merely suffers from a bending at a position ahead of the imaginary crossline even if the solder generates a stress based on its shrinkage. The wiring pattern serves to absorb the stress.
