Patent number: 8087448Abstract: A roll polishing apparatus that can suppress cracks on a strip. The roll polishing apparatus includes brush rolls which face outer periphery of chilled rolls over an axial length of the chilled rolls, respectively, cylinders which urge the brush rolls wholly to the chilled rolls, respectively, and cylinders which deform the brush rolls in conformity to crowns of the chilled rolls, respectively. By these elements, wires of the brush rolls are uniformly contacted on outer peripheries of the chilled rolls to wipe off oxides adhering to the outer peripheries of the chilled rolls.Type: GrantFiled: March 21, 2008Date of Patent: January 3, 2012Assignee: IHI CorporationInventors: Katsumi Nakayama, Hiroyuki Otsuka, Shiro Osada, Hisahiko Fukase

Patent number: 8028740Abstract: A twin roll caster including chilled rolls, side weirs, and a molten-metal delivery nozzle. Baffles, contiguous with bottoms of end faces of the nozzle, project in a casting pool toward the side weirs to suppress stream of the molten metal into a nip between the rolls. Thus, hot molten metal just after poured into the pool does not instantly reach the nip along the side weirs, and molten metal decreases in temperature with lapse of time after the pouring streams into the nip as the rolls are rotated. As a result, belated formation of solidified shells at and adjacent to outer circumferential edges of the chilled rolls is eliminated. Thus, a strip delivered from the nip between the rolls has no reduced thickness at regions adjacent to lateral edges of the strip and has uniform thickness throughout the width of the strip.Type: GrantFiled: July 27, 2006Date of Patent: October 4, 2011Assignee: IHI CorporationInventors: Hiroyuki Otsuka, Hiroki Yoshizawa, Shiro Osada, Hisahiko Fukase

Publication number: 20090126895Abstract: A nozzle end is provided with an extension 11 which has a lower portion immersed in a molten metal pool and extends toward a side weir 2 such that a stagnation area disappears on a free liquid surface of molten metal. The extension 11 is in the form of a quadrangular pyramid lying sidelong and is converged to a point P1 extremely close to the side weir 2. According to this molten metal feed nozzle, a stagnation area on a free liquid surface of molten metal is displaced by the extension 11 contiguous with the nozzle end to suppress generation of an unwanted solidification shell. Thus, no unwanted solidification shell is pinched as foreign matter by solidification shells generated on outer peripheries of chilled rolls 1 for production of a strip and break of a strip derived from enlargement of nip between the rolls can be averted.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 20, 2005Publication date: May 21, 2009Applicant: Ishikawajima-Harima Heavy Industries Co.,LtdInventors: Hiroyuki Otsuka, Akihiko Kimatsuka, Shiro Osada, Hiroki Yoshizawa, Hisahiko Fukase, Rama Mahapatra, Peter Woodberry

Publication number: 20050211411Abstract: A delivery nozzle for a twin roll caster for making has an elongated nozzle body having elongated extending side walls and end walls to form a nozzle trough, and side outlet openings in the side walls capable of discharging molten metal from the nozzle body laterally outwardly from the side walls of the nozzle body. The side walls below the side outlet openings extend downwardly to converge and meet at the lower extremity to form a bottom part of the nozzle body configured to inhibit entrapment of gas bubbles in a casting pool. The side walls forming the bottom part may have generally flat exterior surfaces throughout and meet at an acute angle to form a discrete edge along the nozzle body, or alternatively, convex curved external surfaces meeting at the bottom extremity in an arcuate shape along the nozzle body.Type: ApplicationFiled: February 14, 2005Publication date: September 29, 2005Inventors: Hisahiko Fukase, Shiro Osada, Hiroyuki Otsuka, Atsuhi Hirata, Hiroki Yoshizawa

Patent number: 6820680Abstract: Start up method for initiating casting of metal strip in a twin roll caster comprising parallel casting rolls. A casting pool of molten metal is supported on the casting rolls and confined at the ends of the rolls by side closure plates and the rolls are rotated to deliver cast trip downwardly from the nip between them. One roll is continuously biased laterally toward the other roll either by spring biasing units or by hydraulic biasing units. On start up the gap between rolls is set so as to be less than the thickness of the strip to be cast and the rolls are rotated at such speed that on pouring of molten metal to initiate casting strip is produced to a thickness which is greater than the initial gap between the rolls thereby to cause the biased roll to move bodily away from the other roll to increase the gap between the rolls to accommodate the thickness of the cast strip. This allows initiation of casting without the need for introduction of a dummy bar between the rolls.Type: GrantFiled: March 13, 2002Date of Patent: November 23, 2004Assignee: Castrip, LLCInventors: Hisahiko Fukase, Shiro Osada

Patent number: 6273178Abstract: The invention addresses the problem of edge bulging and breakout of as cast strip due to a decrease of perfect solid phase shell thickness of the strip caused by heat recuperation of the unsolidified portion of the strip, by providing a chamber 19 which encloses the travel path of a strip 8 delivered from a pair of chilled rolls 1a and 1b, a pair of chilled blocks 29a arranged in the chamber to be positioned near a nip between the chilled rolls 1a and 1b, with each chilled block 29a being shaped for loose fitting over an edge of a strip 8 and being capable of injecting cooling gas toward the edge of the strip 8. When the strip 8 is to be continuously cast, the interior of the chamber 19 provides an inert gas atmosphere, in which the cooling gas injected by the cooling blocks 29a injection-cools the edges of the strip 8 delivered from the chilled rolls 1a and 1b at a position near the nip between the chilled rolls 1a and 1b.Type: GrantFiled: April 20, 2000Date of Patent: August 14, 2001Assignees: Ishikawajima-Harima Heavy Industries Company Limited, BHP Steel (JLA) Pty.
