Patent number: 6170589Abstract: A snowmobile including side grips attached to the right and the left side surfaces of a body of a snowmobile at a position corresponding to a position at a distance towards the front of the snowmobile from the center of gravity of the body. The side grips project from the right and the left side surfaces to define a maximum width (Wmax) of the body. A rear grip is attached to the rear end of a floor member at a distance toward the rear of the snowmobile from the center of gravity. When the snowmobile is inclined, the side grips first come into contact with packed snow (the ground) and serve as a bumper so that a body cover of the snowmobile is not damaged. When carrying the snowmobile, the snowmobile is supported at the right and the left side grip and the rear grip on a snowmobile carrier. A front portion of the body includes an engine compartment in front of the floor which is covered with a body cover. A maintenance opening which is covered with a lid is formed in the back wall of the body cover.Type: GrantFiled: February 14, 1997Date of Patent: January 9, 2001Assignee: Honda Giken Kogyo Kabushiki KaishaInventors: Shizuo Kawano, Tadaaki Nagata, Akihiro Komatsu

Patent number: 5964311Abstract: The weight and cost of a steerable ski can be reduced by providing a steerable ski formed of resin as a whole and which includes a hollow portion. The hollow portion is filled with a foamed material as required. Accordingly, the height in cross section of the steerable ski can be increased to thereby increase the modulus of section. As a result, the wall thickness of the steerable ski can be reduced to thereby prevent an increase in the weight and cost.Type: GrantFiled: February 14, 1997Date of Patent: October 12, 1999Assignee: Honda Giken Kogyo Kabushiki KaishaInventors: Kazuhiro Yamamoto, Shizuo Kawano

Patent number: 5727643Abstract: A suspension device for providing a resilient support for a snowmobile body includes a frame for supporting the snowmobile body. A slide rail is operatively connected to the frame for pressing a crawler belt against a snow surface. A swing arm includes a first end pivotally supported on the frame and a second end pivotally mounted on the slide rail. A shock absorber includes a first end pivotally supported on a shaft adjacent to the first end of the swing arm, and a second end of the shock absorber being connected to the frame through a progressive link pivotally supported on the swing arm.Type: GrantFiled: November 29, 1994Date of Patent: March 17, 1998Assignee: Honda Giken Kogyo Kabushiki KaishaInventors: Shizuo Kawano, Tadaaki Nagata

Patent number: 5533585Abstract: A chain of a driving device for a snowmobile can be adjusted by a simple operation. A gear case is provided with lever portions. One lever portion is mounted on a gear case pivot. The other lever portion is fastened with a bracket provided on an upper frame through a chain adjuster. The chain adjuster has a cam surface and has a rotational shaft held in a slit of the bracket. The chain adjuster is loosened and rotated through a predetermined angle. Then, the gear case rotates around the gear case pivot and the idle shaft moves whereby stretching of the chain can be finely adjusted.Type: GrantFiled: November 29, 1994Date of Patent: July 9, 1996Assignee: Honda Giken Kogyo Kabushiki KaishaInventors: Shizuo Kawano, Tadaaki Nagata

Patent number: 4928781Abstract: A motorcycle rear wheel suspension device is disclosed which the damper for the pivotally-connected swing arm mounting the rear wheel derives additional support from the auxiliary frame. The auxiliary frame is connected at one end with the damper and with the motorcycle body frame and at its other end to another position on the vehicle. By means of the organization the damper loading to the vehicle frame is advantageously distributed so that supporting frame members of reduced size and weight can be employed.Type: GrantFiled: June 3, 1988Date of Patent: May 29, 1990Assignee: Honda Giken Kogyo Kabushiki KaishaInventor: Shizuo Kawano
