  • Publication number: 20020071623
Abstract: This invention discloses a selectably directable optical beam defecting device including at least at least one substrate having formed thereon a multiplicity of waveguides, each waveguide receiving light and emitting light, the totality of light emitted by said multiplicity of waveguides producing at least one selectably directable output beam, and at least one multiplexer applying electrical inputs to the at least one substrate for individually controlling the light emitted by each of the multiplicity of waveguides, thereby governing the orientation of the selectably directable output beam.

  • Publication number: 20010035339
Abstract: A method for controlling an index of refraction of silica glass, and in particular quartz glass, is disclosed. The method for controlling the index of refraction of silica glass includes the use of a vacuum ultraviolet laser beam having the same or shorter wavelength absorbable by the silica glass. The vacuum ultraviolet laser beam is irradiated to the silica glass to cause photodissociation of a Si-O bond at the point of irradiation. An index of refraction may also be altered using a vacuum ultraviolet laser beam having a longer wavelength absorbable by the silica glass.

  • Patent number: 6118119
Abstract: A device for simultaneously determining the direction and wavelength of an incident light beam. The device includes a transparent block and a diffraction grating for diffracting the incident light beam to produce a number of diffracted beams within the transparent block. The device further includes a detector array generating an output indicative of positions of intersection of the diffracted beams. Finally, the device includes a processor for processing the output to determine the direction and wavelength of the incident light beam.
