  • Patent number: 7113748
Abstract: The present invention provides a method of controlling a plurality of beam patterns radiated by a base station in a wireless communication system. The method includes receiving at least one signal from a mobile station at the base station, determining estimated attributes of the at least one signal received by the base station. Smoothed versions of the estimated attributes are calculated in accordance with a predetermined set of criteria are calculated. A set of weighted signal parameters are generated to describe a polarization state of the at least one signal received from the mobile station. The generated weighed signal parameters are applied to a signal transmitted by the base station such that the transmitted signal substantially matches the polarization state of the at least one signal from the mobile station.

  • Publication number: 20060172710
Abstract: Apparatus for inserting transmit diversity into an RF signal for transmission, comprises: an RF splitter for splitting the RF signal to be transmitted into two signal parts, and a non-linear phase modulator which applies a non-linear phase modulation to one of the two signal parts, thereby to provide transmit diversity between the first signal part and the second signal part. One of the ways of inserting a non-linear phase modulation into the RF signal is to use a spinning disc with tracks of different dielectric strength. The apparatus is useful in cellular telephony for supplying repeaters and base station extensions with diversity capability.

  • Publication number: 20060068848
Abstract: A base station for a cellular telecommunications network is arranged to support a plurality of angular sectors. Each sector has a single dual column antenna, or two single column antennas, and each column is dual polarized such that each element in each column has a correspondingly polarized element in the other column. Thus the two pairs of correspondingly polarized elements form a phased array pair which is steerable together to form a narrow compound sector beam and steerable apart to form a wide compound sector beam.

  • Publication number: 20060052065
Abstract: A method and corresponding upgrade kit, for enhancing a base station (10) having a CDMA air interface and a passive antenna (12) with receive space diversity capability so as to provide the base station with transmit diversity capability. The method comprises attaching a radio frequency interface unit to an R.F. output of the base station to obtain a sample of a main R.F. signal, attaching a diversity unit (20) to the radio frequency interface unit to generate a transmit diversity signal, and connecting the diversity unit to the passive antenna to transmit the transmit diversity signal.

  • Patent number: 6957050
Abstract: At least two passive antenna arrays of an existing multicarrier base station transceiver system are supplemented by an auxiliary antenna array to provide a system and method of enhancing reverse link sensitivity and reducing the effects of multipath fading in a wireless communication system without the need for modifications to the mobile station. The auxiliary antenna array provides a complementary transmit diversity path for the two passive antennas such that a predetermined time delay is implemented to a composite transmit signal and the delayed composite transmit signal is fed directly to the auxiliary antenna array. The delayed signal and the signals from the passive antenna arrays provide a reduced noise figure and time delay transmit diversity for the multicarrier BTS operation.

  • Publication number: 20050085267
Abstract: A modular base station enhancing system includes multiple bi-directional amplifiers that are remotely controlled. Duplexers, corresponding to the bi-directional amplifiers, interface the bi-directional amplifiers with base station antenna elements, enabling simultaneous transmission and reception through the antenna elements. A control circuit, located remotely from the base station and the bi-directional amplifiers, enables control of at least one parameter in each of the bi-directional amplifiers to control transmission and reception characteristics of the antennas elements. The controllable bi-directional amplifiers may include a linear power amplifier to amplify transmitted signals and a low-noise amplifier to amplify received signals. The base station enhancing system is interoperable with different types of antenna elements, and may be implemented as a radio frequency (RF) front-end of the base station or as an RF repeater.

  • Publication number: 20040063467
Abstract: A cell-shaping apparatus shapes coverage provided by individual sectors of a cellular communications network. A given antenna arrangement is provided which comprises at least two independently directable antenna arrays, and an electronic directing mechanism. The electronic directing mechanism independently directs at least one of plural beams formed by respective ones of the independently steerable antenna arrays.

  • Patent number: 5838673
Abstract: A system for minimizing co-channel interference between transmission sectors at their common periphery. The system exploits the geographic separation of potentially interfering mobile transmitters and utilizes transmission power control. The system employs sectored antennas in a combined frequency hopping, TDMA system wherein each subscriber in a particular sector is assigned a time slot in the system based upon that subscriber's geographic location within that sector. The transmission power in the sector is reduced during certain predetermined time slots and subscribers who are remote from the fringe of the sector are assigned to these power reduced time slots. During up-link the transmission power for subscribers located proximal to the fringe are reduced to cause less co-channel interference between their signals and the signals from other subscribers in different sectors having the same time slot.
