Publication number: 20180081379Abstract: Low cost storage for write once read rarely data is described. In an embodiment a storage device comprises a plurality of hard disk drives connected to a server via an interconnect fabric. The storage device comprises a cooling system which is only capable of cooling a first subset of the hard disk drives and a power supply system which is only capable of powering a second subset of the hard disk drives and in some examples, the interconnect fabric may be only capable of providing full bandwidth for a third subset of the hard disk drives. Each subset may comprise only a small fraction of hard disk drives. A control mechanism, which may be implemented in software, is provided which controls which hard disk drives are active at any time in order that the constraints set by the cooling and power supply systems and interconnect fabric are not violated.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 28, 2017Publication date: March 22, 2018Inventors: Shobana M. BALAKRISHNAN, David T. HARPER, Stephen HEIL, Eric C. PETERSON, Adam B. GLASS, David Alex BUTLER, Austin Nicholas DONNELLY, Antony Ian Taylor ROWSTRON, Sergey LEGTCHENKO

Patent number: 8302166Abstract: Systems, devices, and methods for associating network devices with users are described, which can facilitate establishing a secure user to network device association. In various embodiments, the disclosed subject matter facilitates devices providing indication of location and device identity to a user and recognizing the user is in the proximity of the device. The disclosed subject matter provides efficient and secure device to user association and can facilitate performing customized actions based on the nature of the association.Type: GrantFiled: February 18, 2008Date of Patent: October 30, 2012Assignee: Microsoft CorporationInventors: Shobana M. Balakrishnan, Mudit Goel, Dinan Srilal Gunawardena, Dave Maltz, Michael Schroeder, Fan Yang

Patent number: 7620721Abstract: Aspects of the subject matter described herein relate to replicating initial content in resource replication systems. In aspects, each member participating in a replica group obtains a content set state from a directory service. The content set state indicates whether the member is allowed to synchronize resources with another member participating in the replica group. If the member is designated as a primary member, the member may replicate out resources to its downstream partners. If a member is not designated as a primary member, the member may not replicate out resources to its downstream partners until it has successfully synchronized resources with an upstream partner. Fence values may be set which control which resources win (and are replicated out) during synchronization.Type: GrantFiled: February 28, 2006Date of Patent: November 17, 2009Assignee: Microsoft CorporationInventors: Guhan Suriyanarayanan, Huisheng Liu, Shobana M. Balakrishnan, Nikolaj S. Bjørner

Patent number: 6873935Abstract: The present invention is directed at a system and method for statically checking source code to determine potential compatibility issues with a new software release. The system and method perform a static check on input source files associated with a software release. The static check includes identifying programming constructs, such as function prototypes, structures, unions, and the like, within source code files associated with the software release. The programming constructs undergo a filtering process that reduces the number of potentially false change errors. The filtered programming constructs are saved in a database associated with the software release. The database is then compared with another database containing programming constructs for another software release in order to identify differences between the two software releases. A list of changes is generated that identifies the differences between the two software releases.Type: GrantFiled: March 3, 2003Date of Patent: March 29, 2005Assignee: Microsoft CorporationInventors: Sandford L. Spinrad, Steven R. Hollasch, Shobana M. Balakrishnan
