  • Patent number: 5826559
Abstract: A lean-burn internal combustion engine capable of stably securing a satisfactory vacuum for a vacuum actuator which uses a vacuum in an intake manifold disposed on the side downstream of an intake air amount control mechanism, while preventing a deterioration of a specific fuel consumption and a drivability of the engine. A filling state of gases in the intake manifold is controlled based on pieces of information in respect of an engine operating state and a reduction in vacuum, whereby a vacuum such as to ensure the operation of the vacuum actuator is secured. A control for inhibiting a lean-burn operation of the engine and for suppressing an EGR amount or inhibiting the EGR is made in accordance with an braking manipulation, the ON/OFF state of a vacuum switch, or an output from a vacuum sensor at the time of lean-burn operation.

  • Patent number: 5722363
Abstract: A fuel injection control apparatus for a cylinder-injection type internal combustion engine performs a switching of fuel injection control modes in accordance with the operating state of the internal combustion engine when the engine is operating in a steady state. When the internal combustion engine is operating in a transitional state, for example, when the engine is accelerating or decelerating, a fuel injection control mode suited for the transitional operating state is selected preferentially over the mode selection for a steady state by a fuel injection control mode switching means. Consequently, the fuel injection control apparatus permits desirable operation of the internal combustion engine, making it possible to greatly improve the drivability of a vehicle in which the engine is installed.

  • Patent number: 5694901
Abstract: The invention relates to a method for the determination of a rough road in a vehicle with a multi-cylinder internal combustion engine (1) mounted thereon. With a view to economically performing determination of a rough road with high accuracy, a revolution variance (IAC,VAC) is detected with respect to each cylinder in the internal combustion engine (1). Based on detection of revolution variance states, each of which indicates a deterioration in combustion, in plural cylinders, the vehicle with the internal combustion engine (1) mounted thereon is determined or estimated to be running on a rough road.

  • Patent number: 5687692
Abstract: A combustion control system for a lean-burn engine, to be mounted on an automotive vehicle, uses probabilistic and statistical nature of combustion variance upon lean-burn operation to obtain reliable combustion control. The system detects a variance value in angular acceleration of a rotating member driven by the engine, normalizes the variance value in accordance with an operating state of the engine to determine a normalized variance value. The system also compares the normalized variance value with a predetermined threshold value to obtain a deteriorated combustion determining value. The system compares the deteriorated combustion determining value with a predetermined reference value and controls a combustion variance adjustment element so that the deteriorated combustion determining value matches the reference value.

  • Patent number: 5517970
Abstract: A fuel feeding system according to this invention has a fuel injector capable of controlling the quantity of fuel to be fed to an internal combustion engine, a first detector for detecting a fluctuated state of combustion in the engine, a fuel feed controller for determining a quantity of fuel, which is to be fed from the fuel injector to maintain an air/fuel ratio of the engine at a value in the neighborhood of a lean combustion limit, on the basis of detection data from the first detector and controlling the fuel injector on the basis of the value of the thus-determined quantity of fuel, a second detector for detecting a state of operation of the engine, a control data updating unit for repeatedly updating the predetermined control data on the basis of the detection data when the engine has been detected to be in a first operation state by the second detector, and a control data holder for holding the control data at a value, to which the control data was updated in the immediately preceding first operation

  • Patent number: 5423300
Abstract: An internal combustion engine according to this invention is provided with intake ports each of which is formed to guide a flow of inducted air in a particular direction. Each intake port includes, in the vicinity of its corresponding intake opening to a combustion chamber, a bent port portion bent at a greater curvature than a port portion on a side upstream of the bent port portion. The bent port portion has a greater inner diameter than the inner diameter of the corresponding intake opening, whereby air can be inducted in a sufficient amount without deterioration to the directing function for air to be inducted into the combustion chamber.

  • Patent number: 5417190
Abstract: A stratified burning internal combustion engine according to this invention is equipped with an intake port and a fuel feed device so that stratified tumble flows of different fuel concentrations can be formed in a combustion chamber. An ignition device is provided in the combustion chamber to ignite at least one of the tumble flows, said at least one tumble flow being rich in fuel. To promote the stratified tumble flows, a top wall of a piston has an inclined wall. This makes it possible to strengthen the tumble flows, whereby the stratification of an air-fuel mixture in the combustion chamber can be improved further to permit lean burn at a larger air/fuel ratio.

  • Patent number: 5295464
Abstract: An internal combustion engine according to this invention is provided with intake ports and an injector. The intake ports are designed to form stratified tumble flows of different fuel concentrations in a combustion chamber. A spark plug is arranged in the combustion chamber to ignite one of the tumble flows, which one tumble flow is rich in fuel. Each intake port is provided with a longitudinal partition which divides an interior of the intake port into two passages. These longitudinal partitions are formed in such a way that, of the air-fuel tumble flows formed around the spark plug, the tumble flow closest to the spark plug is formed of a richer air-fuel mixture. Each longitudinal partition is arranged only on a side upstream of a valve stem of an intake valve in the corresponding intake port, so that a sufficient amount of intake air can be obtained while extremely minimizing a reduction in the actual cross-sectional flow area.
