  • Publication number: 20080239210
Abstract: In a transflective liquid crystal display device having a first substrate, a second substrate, a liquid crystal layer disposed between the two substrates and a reflective region and a transmissive region in each pixel; the second substrate has a pixel electrode to drive the liquid crystal layer and a common electrode; the reflective region of the second substrate is formed with an in-cell polarizer between the pixel electrode and common electrode and the reflector. In this invention, the thickness of the liquid crystal layer is set greater in the reflective region than in the transmissive region. • Publication number: 20080094547
Abstract: An image is displayed by modulating TM-polarized light between the polarizer 2 and the wire grid polarizer 18 through the variation of the optical characteristic of the liquid crystal layer 12 interposed between the transparent plate 4 and the transparent plate 26. Degradation of contrast in the bright ambience is avoided by providing an absorption layer for absorbing TE-polarized light on that surface of the wire grid polarizer 18 which faces the liquid crystal layer 12.

  • Publication number: 20080084376
Abstract: In a color display device, when using white (W) sub-pixels in addition to subpixels of red (R) and green (G) plus blue (B) without increasing a wiring line number, the per-color pixel number in a unit area decreases so that the image resolution is deteriorated. The area and number of subpixels are adjusted in accordance with the visual sensitivity or luminosity required. Practically, the area of red (R) and blue (B) subpixels which are relatively low in luminosity is set to be about two times greater than the area of green (G) and white (W) subpixels that are relatively high in luminosity while letting the number of green (G) and white (W) subpixels be twice the number of red (R) and blue (B) subpixels. A larger subpixel is configured from a plurality of unit subpixels. A smaller subpixel is formed of a one unit subpixel.

  • Publication number: 20080079876
Abstract: A transreflective or “semi-transmissive” liquid crystal display (LCD) device of the vertical alignment (VA) type is disclosed. The VA-LCD device includes a pair of spaced-apart substrates with a layer of liquid crystal (LC) material sandwiched therebetween. The LCD device also includes a polarization plate provided on one of the substrates, another polarization plate on the other substrate, and a matrix of rows and columns of pixels formed between the substrates. Each pixel has a reflection part and a transmission part. The LC layer is variable in thickness so that its portion at the transmission part is thicker than a portion at the reflection part. At the reflection part, an internal retardation plate having an optical phase difference is disposed between the LC layer and its associated substrate. This plate forms an angle of about 45 degrees with the absorption axis of each polarization plate.

  • Patent number: 7352416
Abstract: A liquid crystal display element comprising two transparent substrates, at least one of which is transparent, and a liquid crystal layer interposed between the two substrates. A plurality of pixels and active elements for driving the liquid crystal at the plurality of pixels are incorporated into at least one of the two substrates, and an optical axis of an incident light beam upon the liquid crystal layer is present in a plane which is substantially perpendicular to a direction of orientation of liquid crystal molecules on at least one of the two substrates, and the incident light impinges upon the liquid crystal layer in a direction which is inclined by a predetermined angle to the direction of the normal line of the substrate. With this arrangement, a desired phase modulation is obtained through slight motion of the liquid crystal molecules, thereby greatly reducing the liquid crystal drive voltage.

  • Publication number: 20070222723
Abstract: An image display apparatus configured by a display panel having an image memory element in a pixel, which achieves low power consumption. A nonvolatile image memory element 1, which can change the resistance value by phase change, is connected to a pixel electrode 25 of a liquid crystal element 5. The output of a thin-film transistor 17 driven by scanning and signal electrode lines 7, 9 is connected to the pixel electrode 25. When the scanning electrode line 7 is selected to have a high level voltage, the thin-film transistor 17 is turned on and a current signal flowing through the signal electrode 9 is sent through the image memory element 1 to a reference electrode line 15. Depending on the current value or pulse width passing through the image memory element 1, the resistance of the image memory element 1 is changed and is stored as a resistance value.
