Patent number: 4466400Abstract: A piston and cylinder are oblong in cross section with the major dimension at right angles to the crankshaft axis. An inlet valve and an exhaust valve are mounted near opposed end portions of the oblong cylinder with a spark plug arranged along the minor centerline, either between the valve or displaced laterally from the major centerline of the cylinder. The valves are symmetrically inclined with respect to the central axis of the oblong cylinder, and are operated from separate camshafts. The combustion chamber roof is a concave surface having both major and minor centerline surface elements which employ radii of curvature greater than the radius of curvature of the cross-sectional ends of the oblong cylinder.Type: GrantFiled: December 21, 1982Date of Patent: August 21, 1984Assignee: Honda Giken Kogyo Kabushiki KaishaInventors: Shoichiro Irimajiri, Shoichi Honda

Patent number: 4362135Abstract: An internal combustion engine is provided with at least one oblong cylinder and an oblong piston mounted to reciprocate therein. A piston ring is positioned within an annular piston ring groove formed in the piston, the piston ring including an outer ring in contact with the cylinder, an inner ring and a biasing means such as a corrugated plate spring positioned between the inner ring and the outer ring. The inner ring is normally slightly spaced apart from the inner periphery of the piston ring groove so that the piston ring is allowed to be laterally displaced the amount of such spacing during piston oscillation, thereby providing improved sealing between the piston and cylinder.Type: GrantFiled: May 11, 1981Date of Patent: December 7, 1982Assignee: Honda Giken Kogyo Kabushiki KaishaInventor: Shoichiro Irimajiri

Patent number: 4256068Abstract: A four cylinder four cycle spark ignition engine has oblong pistons each mounted to reciprocate in sliding contact with an oblong cylinder. Intake valves in a series are positioned in a straight line on one side of and parallel to a central plane extending through the longest dimension of each oblong cylinder. Exhaust valves in a series are positioned in a straight line on the other side of and parallel to that central plane. A cam shaft operates all of the intake valves and another cam shaft operates all of the exhaust valves.Type: GrantFiled: November 6, 1979Date of Patent: March 17, 1981Assignee: Honda Giken Kogyo Kabushiki KaishaInventors: Shoichiro Irimajiri, Takeo Fukui

Patent number: 4034561Abstract: Each cylinder of an internal combustion spark ignition V-8 engine is provided with a main combustion chamber and an auxiliary combustion chamber connected by a torch opening. A lean air-fuel mixture is supplied to the main combustion chambers and a rich air-fuel mixture is supplied to the auxiliary combustion chambers. An exhaust reaction chamber assembly is positioned between the two banks of cylinders and is provided with a liner having a first reaction chamber therein. Four exhaust tubes each connected to receive exhaust gases from two adjacent cylinders project into the reaction chamber and each has a discharge end in close proximity and in substantial alignment with the discharge end of another exhaust tube so that exhaust gases discharged by each exhaust tube enter another exhaust tube and also enter into the first reaction chamber. The first reaction chamber discharges into an enclosing second reaction chamber from which heat is derived to vaporize both of the air-fuel mixtures.Type: GrantFiled: December 24, 1975Date of Patent: July 12, 1977Assignee: Honda Giken Kogyo Kabushiki KaishaInventors: Yoshitoshi Sakurai, Takao Okura, Shoichiro Irimajiri

Patent number: 3994129Abstract: An internal-combustion spark-ignition V-8 piston engine has an exhaust gas reaction chamber body positioned between its two banks of cylinders. Each cylinder has a main combustion chamber communicating with an auxiliary combustion chamber by means of a torch opening. A main intake manifold with branching portion over the reaction chamber communicates with main intake passages to supply a lean air-fuel mixture to the main combustion chambers. An auxiliary intake manifold with branching portion directly below the central portion of the branching portion of the main intake manifold communicates with auxiliary intake passages to supply a rich air-fuel mixture to the auxiliary combustion chambers. Exhaust passages supply hot exhaust gases from the cylinders to exhaust gas conduits, each of which receives hot exhaust gases from two adjacent cylinders and projects through an insulated wall of the reaction chamber to discharge into it toward an end wall thereof.Type: GrantFiled: December 30, 1974Date of Patent: November 30, 1976Assignee: Honda Giken Kogyo Kabushiki KaishaInventors: Yoshitoshi Sakurai, Shoichiro Irimajiri
