  • Patent number: 7961433
Abstract: A slider is formed with an ABS topography that eliminates the accumulation of lubricant swept from the surface of a rotating disk in an operating HDD. The topography includes air channeling grooves in which are formed backflow blocking elements that prevent the formation airflow patterns that would cause lubricant to be aspirated into the ABS topography of the slider and that create airflow patterns that sweep lubricant away from the ABS of the slider. The topography is first tested to make sure that the slider has the proper flying height and aerodynamic stability, then the backflow blocking elements are added to control the airflow, while maintaining the desired flying height and stability.

  • Patent number: 7764468
Abstract: Provided is a smear-removing method that can remove smear of a manufactured thin-film magnetic head. The method is performed to a thin-film magnetic head including an MR effect element for reading data having two electrode layers sandwiching an MR effect multilayer as a magneto-sensitive portion therebetween. The method comprises the step of applying a stress voltage less than a breaking voltage of the MR effect element between the two electrode layers to burn off smear. In the method, it is preferable that the stress voltage is applied while an electric resistance or an output voltage of the MR effect element is measured, and the stress voltage is increased until the value of the electric resistance or the output voltage reaches an upper limit specified value specified from a value of an electric resistance or an output voltage in a normal case where smear is not present.

  • Patent number: 6349019
Abstract: This invention provides a magnetic head device to be incorporated in a hard disc drive device which can minimize the fluctuations in the height of a floating head slider between the outer periphery and inner periphery of a magnetic disc and which has stable floating characteristics over the whole recording area thereof. The magnetic head device includes a head arm which is attached within a hard disc drive device in a rotatable/swingable manner and a head slider fixed on an end of a suspension member extending from the head arm, wherein the distance between the rotational center of the head arm to the center of the head slider and the position of the center of the rotation of the head arm are so determined to satisfy the relation, −0.1≦(D−L)≦0.6 W−4.
