Patent number: 7325531Abstract: An intake structure is provided for a V-type internal combustion engine having cylinders banked in a V pattern. A throttle body includes a throttle valve interposed in an intake passage extending to the inner side of the V banks and bent to be parallel to a crankshaft. The throttle body is provided with a bypass passage bypassing the throttle valve. An idle control valve for opening and closing the bypass passage by being moved in a direction orthogonal to the intake passage parallel to the crankshaft is added to the throttle body. A drive shaft for moving the idle control valve is projected from an electric actuator in the state of being directed in the moving direction of the idle control valve. The resulting configuration makes it possible to reduce the size of a throttle body and to suppress the overall width of the engine.Type: GrantFiled: August 29, 2006Date of Patent: February 5, 2008Assignee: Honda Motor Co., Ltd.Inventor: Shosuke Suzuki

Patent number: 6513613Abstract: A motorcycle, such as a scooter-type motorcycle, includes an engine main body. The engine main body is non-swingably supported by a frame at a location under a seat. A transmission case is swingably supported by the engine main body. A rear wheel is attached to the transmission case and hence swingable relative to the frame. A fuel system is provided atop the engine main body, and hence is not swingably relative to the frame. The engine main body has cylinder bores which are spaced across the width of the motorcycle. The cylinder bores are tilted upwardly and forwardly, so as to create a space below a forward portion of the engine main body. A fuel tank has a rear portion disposed below the forward portion of the engine main body.Type: GrantFiled: June 8, 2001Date of Patent: February 4, 2003Assignee: Honda Giken Kogyo Kabushiki KaishaInventors: Shosuke Suzuki, Fumie Okada

Patent number: 6202631Abstract: To maintain a float chamber at atmospheric pressure by quickly discharging fuel from the float chamber even when a relatively large amount of fuel gushes into the float chamber. A float chamber is provided for containing a predetermined quantity of fuel. The float chamber includes an upper end and a bottom. Main air paths are provided that include lower ends and upper ends. The lower ends are in communication with a space disposed above a surface of the fuel in the float chamber of the carburetor. A plurality of branches include lower ends and upper ends. The lower ends of the branches are open to the atmosphere. At least one expansion chamber is provided that is in communication with the upper ends of the main air paths and the upper ends of the plurality of branches. The at least one expansion chamber is positioned above the float chamber and includes a larger cross-sectional area relative to a cross-sectional area of the main air paths and the branches.Type: GrantFiled: December 21, 1998Date of Patent: March 20, 2001Assignee: Honda Giken Kogyo Kabushiki KaishaInventors: Katsumi Yamamoto, Shosuke Suzuki

Patent number: 5394847Abstract: A throttle control system reliably determines failure of a throttle valve driving system. During engine idling, a throttle valve is opened and closed by an actuator. A central processing unit generates a pulse-like drive signal to the actuator through a back-up integrated circuit. When the frequency of the drive signal exceeds a predetermined value, the back-up integrated circuit determines that a failure in the central processing unit has occurred. Since this determination is based on the frequency of the drive signal, a driving system failure can be reliably detected even using pulse-like signals.Type: GrantFiled: July 27, 1993Date of Patent: March 7, 1995Assignee: Nippondenso Co., Ltd.Inventors: Toshiaki Kikuchi, Shosuke Suzuki
