  • Patent number: 7530346
Abstract: In an internal combustion engine wherein an intake manifold for performing intake for the front and rear cylinders is placed in a narrow and high-temperature V-bank, to provide a structure of an intake device that does not allow an overall height of the internal combustion engine to become high. An intake structure of a V-type internal combustion engine includes a throttle body having a throttle opening sensor on one end of a throttle valve shaft that is provided so that an intake passage of the throttle body can extend in a crankshaft direction between front and rear cylinders. The center of the intake passage of the throttle body is disposed to be shifted to one cylinder side, and the throttle opening sensor is placed on a side where the center of the intake passage of the throttle body is apart from the cylinder.

  • Patent number: 7325531
Abstract: An intake structure is provided for a V-type internal combustion engine having cylinders banked in a V pattern. A throttle body includes a throttle valve interposed in an intake passage extending to the inner side of the V banks and bent to be parallel to a crankshaft. The throttle body is provided with a bypass passage bypassing the throttle valve. An idle control valve for opening and closing the bypass passage by being moved in a direction orthogonal to the intake passage parallel to the crankshaft is added to the throttle body. A drive shaft for moving the idle control valve is projected from an electric actuator in the state of being directed in the moving direction of the idle control valve. The resulting configuration makes it possible to reduce the size of a throttle body and to suppress the overall width of the engine.

  • Patent number: 6513613
Abstract: A motorcycle, such as a scooter-type motorcycle, includes an engine main body. The engine main body is non-swingably supported by a frame at a location under a seat. A transmission case is swingably supported by the engine main body. A rear wheel is attached to the transmission case and hence swingable relative to the frame. A fuel system is provided atop the engine main body, and hence is not swingably relative to the frame. The engine main body has cylinder bores which are spaced across the width of the motorcycle. The cylinder bores are tilted upwardly and forwardly, so as to create a space below a forward portion of the engine main body. A fuel tank has a rear portion disposed below the forward portion of the engine main body.

  • Patent number: 6202631
Abstract: To maintain a float chamber at atmospheric pressure by quickly discharging fuel from the float chamber even when a relatively large amount of fuel gushes into the float chamber. A float chamber is provided for containing a predetermined quantity of fuel. The float chamber includes an upper end and a bottom. Main air paths are provided that include lower ends and upper ends. The lower ends are in communication with a space disposed above a surface of the fuel in the float chamber of the carburetor. A plurality of branches include lower ends and upper ends. The lower ends of the branches are open to the atmosphere. At least one expansion chamber is provided that is in communication with the upper ends of the main air paths and the upper ends of the plurality of branches. The at least one expansion chamber is positioned above the float chamber and includes a larger cross-sectional area relative to a cross-sectional area of the main air paths and the branches.

  • Patent number: 5394847
Abstract: A throttle control system reliably determines failure of a throttle valve driving system. During engine idling, a throttle valve is opened and closed by an actuator. A central processing unit generates a pulse-like drive signal to the actuator through a back-up integrated circuit. When the frequency of the drive signal exceeds a predetermined value, the back-up integrated circuit determines that a failure in the central processing unit has occurred. Since this determination is based on the frequency of the drive signal, a driving system failure can be reliably detected even using pulse-like signals.

  • Patent number: 4426975
Abstract: In response to the occurrence of knocking in an internal combustion engine, the basic ignition timing is corrected in a direction to retard it through the charging and discharging of an integrator circuit. The integrated current output of the integrator circuit is varied in accordance with a voltage corresponding to the speed of the engine so as to limit the maximum amount of ignition timing retard at low speeds or high speeds of the engine.
