A contemplated method includes: for each layer in the storage system, designating a relative position with respect to at least one other layer in the storage system; imparting a caching policy to be applied collectively to all layers, the caching policy being based on the relative position of each layer with respect to at least one other layer in the storage system; and upon an attempt to cache data in at least one of the layers, maintaining communication between the layers to permit application of the caching policy.
