The CHO cell may include a heterologous polynucleotide encoding IL6 and/or an IL6 pathway member or, in the absence of the heterologous IL6 or an IL6 pathway member polynucleotide, the CHO cell can be cultured in the presence of exogenously added IL6 polypeptide. Such CHO cells exhibit superior expression of the polypeptide of interest in culture. Methods for expressing a polypeptide of interest and methods for making such CHO cells are part of the present invention.
