  • Patent number: 6689618
Abstract: A single reagent system and a method to detect and measure oxidizing adulterants in bodily fluid being screened for drugs of abuse are disclosed. The system comprising a strip containing 0.05 to 0.2 micromole/25 sq. mm. of a benzidine derivative and is used to detect sodium hypochlorite (bleach), chlorine, hydrogen peroxide, sodium bromide, sodium iodide, sodium nitrite, and pyridinium chlorochromate adulterants in urine, sweat, saliva, blood or other bodily fluids during screening for drugs of abuse.

  • Patent number: 5755231
Abstract: A test strip includes a first layer and an overlying differential flow-retarding layer that reduces the fraction of a component of a liquid specimen percolated therethrough. An inert backing, preferably having an aperture therethrough, overlies the flow-retarding layer. For the testing of a blood specimen, the flow-retarding layer is formed of glass fibers that reduce the fraction of red blood cells in the percolate, leaving primarily, but not entirely, plasma in the percolate. The first layer includes chemicals that react with a component of the plasma such as glucose in a measurable reaction, preferably a visually measurable reaction. In using this test strip, the blood specimen is placed into the aperture of the backing and permitted to percolate through the flow-retarding layer such that a fraction of the red blood cells is removed from the percolate.

  • Patent number: 4543338
Abstract: A test device for determining the presence of a substance in a test sample is disclosed, as well as methods for making and using it. The device comprises a support member having a reagent layer affixed to it which contains a reagent system which produces a detectable response in the presence of the analyte. The reagent layer has an upper layer affixed to the side opposite the support member. The upper layer comprises a polymer which is at least partially crosslinked. The method of use comprises contacting the device with the test sample, wiping the upper layer free of test sample residue, and observing a detectable response.

  • Patent number: 4427770
Abstract: An analytical element for quantitatively determining high levels of glucose in blood is made by (a) impregnating a carrier with a first solution, having dissolved therein 4-aminoantipyrine and 3-hydroxy-2,4,6-triiodobenzoic acid or 3,5-dichloro-2-hydroxy-benzene sulfonic acid or salts thereof, a glucose oxidase and a peroxidase, and drying the carrier; and (b) applying to the carrier a second solution of a film-forming agent in a volatile solvent, and drying to remove the volatile solvent and leave a film over the dried first impregnant.
