  • Publication number: 20090046332
Abstract: A color conversion apparatus receives first image data including first red-green-blue color data in which the possible values of the red, green, and blue components extend beyond the range from 0% to 100%. The first color data are analyzed into first hue region data, the magnitudes of which are adjusted according to the brightness and/or saturation of the first color data to obtain second and third hue region data. The gamut of colors of the first image data is detected, and matrix coefficients are generated according to the detected gamut. The matrix coefficients are used to perform a matrix operation on the second and third hue region data to obtain second color data, thereby converting the first image data to second image data with conversion characteristics appropriate for the gamut of colors of the first image data.

  • Publication number: 20080199102
Abstract: A block noise detector has a spatial difference calculator that calculates differences between values of adjacent pixels. A spatial difference comparator detects edges by comparing the calculated differences. Eight counters count edges detected at different groups of positions spaced eight pixels apart in each horizontal line. The maximum count and the group of positions at which it occurs are detected at the end of each horizontal line to detect block noise and the positions of the block boundaries. The block noise detector is small in size because it only has to count edges in one line at a time, and detects edges accurately by comparing the difference at a given position separately with differences to the left and differences to the right.

  • Patent number: 7414633
Abstract: A process is provided for developing and converting a lookup table (hereinafter called a “LUT”) composed of only characteristic points of the characteristic of a color device and having a volume smaller than that of a multidimensional LUT into a multidimensional LUT by a table development process. Image data converting means uses the multidimensional LUT to convert input image data into output image data. Thus, an effect can be obtained in that a color management apparatus can be operated with only the LUT composed of only characteristic points of the characteristic of the device and having a small volume.

  • Publication number: 20080158441
Abstract: An image display apparatus has a light valve that spatially modulates light emitted by a light source according to a gamma-corrected video signal consisting of successive video fields, by modulating the light pulse widths of individual picture elements in each field. The spatially modulated light is projected onto a screen. A light source driver changes the intensity of the light source as a function of elapsed time in each video field so as to approximately cancel the effect of the gamma correction. Only a slight reverse gamma correction is then needed to produce the correct brightness relationship between the video signal and the projected image. Consequently, fewer gradation levels are lost than in a conventional reverse gamma correction, and the picture quality in low-brightness areas of the projected image is improved.

  • Publication number: 20080055290
Abstract: A field sequential color display is obtained by successive display of a sequence of monochrome images of different colors. Monochrome images in at least one of the colors are displayed with light of two different brightness levels, the light of the lower brightness being used to display comparatively low gray levels, the light of both the lower and higher brightness levels being used to display comparatively high gray levels. This scheme provides extra resolution at the low end of the gray scale, and increases the number of displayable gray levels by counteracting the loss of gray levels that occurs due to gamma correction.

  • Publication number: 20080018807
Abstract: A field sequential color display is obtained by successive display of a sequence of monochromatic images. Each monochromatic image is displayed with light occupying a different wavelength region, but one of the wavelength regions includes part or all of another one of the wavelength regions. These two wavelength regions are used to display one of the original primary colors of the color image, the included or partially included wavelength region being used for comparatively low gray levels and both wavelength regions being used for comparatively high gray levels. This scheme provides a way to increase the number of gray levels that can be displayed following a gamma correction, as well as broadening the gamut of reproducible colors.

  • Patent number: 7298893
Abstract: In an image processing device and image processing method in which first image data consisting of a plurality of color data and constituting image information for each pixel are input, and second image data consisting of a plurality of color data are calculated and output, after color conversion of the first image data, dither processing is applied to produce the second image data. As a result, information of the fractional part generated as a result of the color conversion is not omitted but preserved. Tone conversion may be performed after the color conversion, and before the dither processing. The image processing device or image processing method can restrain reduction in the number of colors that can be expressed, and restrain the generation of discontinuities (irregularities) in the change of data, while realizing an “exact color reproduction” or “preferred color reproduction.

  • Publication number: 20070188525
Abstract: An image processing method extends n-bit input image data by ? bits to generate (n+?)-bit source data, where n and ? are positive integers, and smoothes the source data. The maximum difference between gray levels of the unsmoothed source data in an area localized around each pixel is calculated, and a mixing ratio is determined from the maximum difference. The smoothed and unsmoothed source data are mixed according to the mixing ratio to generate output image data. In areas with gradually changing gray levels, the output image data are weighted toward the smoothed source data, mitigating image degradation due to quantization and gamma correction. In areas with sharp edges, the output image data are weighted toward the unsmoothed source data, preventing a loss of edge sharpness.

  • Publication number: 20070132680
Abstract: A field-sequential display apparatus having a light source that emits light of different colors in different subframes of an image controls the spectral distribution of the light emitted in each subframe according to characteristics of the input image data, or to ambient conditions or other user-specified conditions. The input image data are processed so that image colors are displayed correctly despite changes in the spectral distribution of the light-source colors. This scheme enables the gamut of reproducible colors to be altered from frame to frame to provide an appropriate balance between brightness and color saturation in each frame, and to compensate for ambient lighting conditions.
