    Abstract: In a predetermined exhaust gas recirculation (“EGR”) region, an exhaust gas recirculation control device performs control to recirculate a portion of exhaust gas of an internal combustion engine to a suction passage through an EGR passage in which an EGR valve is provided. If it is detected that a fuel cut recovery condition is satisfied after a fuel cut condition is satisfied, the EGR valve is closed from when the fuel cut recovery condition is satisfied until fuel gas is detected in an exhaust gas passage that leads from a combustion chamber to an inlet of the EGR passage.

The maximum intake air quantity calculating section is configured to calculate a theoretical maximum intake air quantity. The engine control section is configured to control the engine by using an intake air quantity function between a first value obtained by dividing the reference intake air quantity by the maximum intake air quantity and a second value obtained by dividing an actual intake air quantity corresponding to the valve characteristics of the intake valve by the maximum intake air quantity.
