  • Patent number: 5199309
Abstract: In a starter unit, the internal gear frame of an epicycle reduction gear is set rotatable with respect to the front bracket, and a first over-running clutch is made up of a clutch outer fixed to the front bracket, and a clutch inner which is the front end portion of the internal gear frame, and a second over-running clutch which is a conventional over-running clutch is mounted on the output shaft. The provision of the two over-running clutches eliminates the difficulty that, when the start switch is turned on during the inertial rotation of the engine or starter unit, the pinion is reengaged with the ring gear, so that abnormal shock is applied to the side of the starter unit to damage the rotation transmitting members.

  • Patent number: 5195389
Abstract: A planetary speed reduction gear type starter comprising a planetary speed reduction gear unit and a DC motor is designed as follows: In the case where the motor is smaller in outside diameter than the planetary speed reduction gear unit, the inside diameter of the yoke is accordingly reduced; that is, the front end portion of the yoke is increased in inside diameter into a large diameter portion. The planetary speed reduction gear unit is fitted in the large diameter portion, with the front end of which a front bracket is engaged. Thus, only one kind of front bracket can be used for a plurality of planetary speed reduction gear type starters different in reduction gear ratio.

  • Patent number: 5156057
Abstract: In an overhang type starter, an output shaft having a pinion for rotating a ring gear of an engine is arranged so as to move forwardly through an interlocking member by a shift lever which is turned by an electromagnetic switch. Accordingly, it is not necessary to move an over-running clutch large in weight by the shift lever, so that the electromagnetic switch can be made compact in size.

  • Patent number: 5111705
Abstract: A starter motor is adapted to transmit through an overrunning clutch device a rotating force of an armature to a rotary output shaft to which a pinion is fitted by means of a linear spline structure so that the pinion is engageable with a ring gear connected to an engine. The rotary output shaft has a shoulder portion between a helical spline portion, which is engaged with a helical spline which in turn is formed at the inner circumference of the front part of a clutch inner member in the overrunning clutch device, and a linear spline portion to which the pinion is fitted, and a spring is disposed inside the inner diameter of the heical spline of the clutch inner member and between the helical spline of the rotary output shaft and the rear end of the pinion so that the pinion is pushed forwardly wherein the shoulder portion has a diamter smaller than the diameter of the root of the helical spline of the rotary output shaft.

  • Patent number: 5106355
Abstract: In an planetary gear unit comprising a sum gear, an internal gear, and planetary gears which are supported through a carrier and engaged with the sun gear and the internal gear, at least a cut is formed in the internal gear in such a manner that the position of the cut is not coincident with the angular intervals of the planetary gears in the direction of revolution, and the teeth are partially removed by the cut. Hence, the part of the internal gear where the cut is formed may be curved inwardly or flattened to provide a space for accommodating anything which otherwise obstructs the installation of the planetary gear unit.

  • Patent number: 5101114
Abstract: A starter motor for an engine which does not readily admit water into a casing thereof and which allows water to be discharged promptly from the housing. The starter motor comprises a seal member for closing a gap between an outer periphery of a pinion moving member on an output rotary shaft or of an overrunning clutch and the casing, and the casing has two communicating holes formed therein for the communication with the atmospheric air outside the casing. One of the communicating holes is formed at a lower portion of the casing so that water may be discharged outwardly from within the casing therethrough. The other communicating hole is formed at a higher location of the casing and may be a communicating groove formed in an end face of a front bracket of the casing along which the front bracket is coupled to a yoke of an electric motor which is mounted in the casing and operatively coupled to the pinion moving member by way of the overrunning clutch.
